Understanding the mechanisms behind exerting self-control may reveal why health behaviors are resistant to change. Activity in the right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) plays a role in self-control processes and may be modulated using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).
The chocolate plumage color in chickens is due to a sex-linked recessive mutation, choc, which dilutes eumelanin pigmentation. Because TYRP1 is sex-linked in chickens, and TYRP1 mutations determine brown coat color in mammals, TYRP1 appeared as the obvious candidate gene for the choc mutation. By combining gene mapping with gene capture, a complete association was identified between the chocolate phenotype and a missense mutation leading to a His214Asn change in the ZnA zinc-binding domain of the protein. A...
The connection between chocolate and cocoa is studied. As cocoa is produced in different countries, samples coming from the same geographical region are analysed. The analyses focus on the characterisation of the considered samples for different aspects of quality and to individuate the original locations of production, also connecting this with the nutritional aspects. For this purpose, qualitative and quantitative traditional analysis and determination of fatty acid content are performed. The obtained exp...
The intake of polyphenols has certain health benefits. This study will aim to assess the effect of adding a daily amount of chocolate high in cocoa content and polyphenols to the normal diet on blood pressure, vascular function, cognitive performance, quality of life and body composition in postmenopausal women.
We report an unusual complication of Chocolate nitinol-constraining structure after right superficial femoral artery (SFA) angioplasty. Procedure was performed by Vascular Surgeons in an operating theatre equipped by a portable fluoroscopy unit. Under local anaesthesia, by a contralateral approach, a 7F introducer sheath was advanced through the proximal portion of the right common iliac artery. Due to the severe aorto-iliac vessels calcification, it was not possible place the introducer sheath into a more ...
Food-related attentional bias (AB) varies both between individuals (i.e. trait differences) and within individuals (i.e. state differences), as a function of a food's momentary incentive value. People with self-perceived food addiction (SPFA) find food particularly rewarding and may therefore demonstrate increased AB to food-related cues, relative to those who do not perceive themselves as food addicts. However, these trait differences may interact with state factors, such as hunger and the perceived availa...
Work-related injuries in the U.S. have steadily declined over the past three decades.
Hazelnut and cocoa spread is an Italian product containing cocoa and hazelnut. Several epidemiological studies suggest that cocoa and hazelnuts cocoa exert beneficial cardiovascular effects. To investigate whether in smokers, hazelnut and cocoa spread elicits artery dilatation via down-regulation of oxidative stress. Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), oxidative stress (as assessed by serum isoprostanes excretion, Nox2 activation and NO bioavailability) and antioxidant status [as assessed by vitamin E levels, p...
Attentional biases for reward-related (e.g., food, alcohol) cues are moderated by the expectation of imminent reward availability, but the psychological mechanisms that underlie this effect are unclear. We report two studies in which we investigated if effects of reward gain anticipation are specific to the type of reward that is anticipated, and if anticipation of loss has comparable effects to anticipation of reward gain. We used an eye tracking task to investigate the effects of anticipation of gain (exp...
The Canadian lynx and snowshoe hare pelt data by the Hudson Bay Company did not fit the classical predator-prey theory. Rather than following the peak density of the hare, that of the lynx leads it, creating the hares-eat-lynx (HEL) paradox. Although trappers were suspected to play a role, no mathematical model has ever demonstrated the HEL effect. Here we show that the long-held assumption that the pelt number is a proxy of the wild populations is false and that when the data are modeled by the harvest rat...
To develop tools that quantify employers' investment in building cultures of health (COH) - inside and outside company walls.
In this work, a novel approach was developed to perform dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction using a rapid pressure variation to disperse the extraction solvent in an aqueous medium. A glass syringe was used to produce an environment subject to a rapid pressure difference. The element used as a model was nickel and the approach was called pressure variation in-syringe dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (PV-IS-DLLME). The extraction solvent used was 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, ...
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) identifies suboptimal management of treatment toxicities as a care gap and proposes the measurement of hospital performance on the basis of emergency department visits for 10 common symptoms. Current management strategies do not address symptom co-occurrence.
The current study explored the influence of three summary indicator front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labels on consumer perceptions of the healthiness of different beverage products. In 2016, a total of 675 respondents in southwestern Ontario aged 16 and over viewed images of soda, unflavoured milk and chocolate milk displaying one of four FOP label conditions (no FOP label, numeric rating, health star rating (HSR), or simplified traffic light (STL)), and rated the products' healthiness. Participants also indi...

The present study aims to quantify acrylamide in caffeinated beverages including American coffee, Lebanese coffee, espresso, instant coffee and hot chocolate, and to determine their carcinogenic and neurotoxic risks. A survey was carried for this purpose whereby 78% of the Lebanese population was found to consume at least one type of caffeinated beverages. Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry analysis revealed that the average acrylamide level in caffeinated beverages is 29,176 μg/kg sample. The daily co...
About half of all workers in high-income countries work in small companies. However, regulatory bodies and researchers predominantly work with large companies because they are more convenient to study and easier to reach. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of exposure to asthmagens and the use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) by company size.
In order to reduce the irritation of the airway during tracheobronchial foreign body (TFB) removal, tracheal surface anesthesia is usually performed using a laryngotracheal topical anesthesia (LTA) kit (LTA20, Highgreen Medical Technology Company, China), but difficulty in withdrawing the LTA kit is rarely reported. We present a case of a difficulty to withdraw the LTA kit due to its entrapment by the movement of a TFB.
Positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of the GABA receptor constitute a class of pharmacological agents gaining increasing attention in the alcohol research field because of their ability to suppress several alcohol-related behaviors in rodents. CMPPE is a novel GABA PAM, still limitedly characterized in vivo. It was therefore of interest to test its ability to affect operant, oral self-administration of alcohol and cue-induced reinstatement of alcohol seeking in alcohol-preferring rats. To this end, femal...
Merck & Company Inc. have developed tildrakizumab (tildrakizumab-asmn; Ilumya™), a high-affinity, humanised IgG1 κ monoclonal antibody that specifically targets interleukin-23 p19, as a treatment for chronic plaque psoriasis. The drug was recently approved for marketing by the US FDA based on positive results from the phase III reSURFACE clinical trial programme in patients with chronic plaque psoriasis. This article summarizes the milestones in the development of tildrakizumab leading to this first appr...
HLA-B*5701 screening identifies patients at increased risk for abacavir (ABC) hypersensitivity reaction (HSR). Screening was adopted in GlaxoSmithKline and ViiV Healthcare clinical trials in 2007 and HIV treatment guidelines in 2008. Company meta-analyses of trials pre-HLA-B*5701 screening reported HSR rates of 4% to 8%. We analyzed the effectiveness of HLA-B*5701 screening on reducing HSR rates using clinical trial, observational (OPERA) cohort, and spontaneous reporting data.
