Generic Cost-Effectiveness Models: A Proof of Concept of a Tool for Informed Decision-Making for Public Health Precision Medicine.

Economic evaluation is integral to informed public health decision-making in the rapidly growing field of precision and personalized medicine (PM); however, this research requires specialized expertise and significant resources. Generic models are a novel innovation to efficiently address a critical PM evidence shortage and implementation barrier by enabling use of population-specific input values. This is a generic PM economic evaluation model proof-of-concept study for a pharmacogenomic use case.

Genomic characterization of Haemophilus influenzae: a focus on the capsule locus.

Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) can cause invasive diseases such as meningitis, pneumonia, or sepsis. Typeable Hi includes six serotypes (a through f), each expressing a unique capsular polysaccharide. The capsule, encoded by the genes within the capsule locus, is a major virulence factor of typeable Hi. Non-typeable (NTHi) does not express capsule and is associated with invasive and non-invasive diseases.

Contemporary Management of the Hip Capsule During Arthroscopic Hip Preservation Surgery.

The importance of the hip capsule and its effect on hip biomechanics, functional outcomes, and hip arthroscopy success rates has been demonstrated in recent studies. These results have led to a shift in management of the hip capsule, where an increasing number of surgeons routinely perform complete capsular closure. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent studies evaluating the hip capsule and describe contemporary capsular management and repair.

Demonstration of Pressure Reduction in a New Proof of Concept Spine Board.

Evaluation of Lens Capsule Stability Using Capsular Tension Ring, Iris Retractor, and Capsule Expander Using a Porcine Model With Zonular Dehiscence.

We evaluate the efficacy of capsular tension rings (CTRs), iris retractors (IRs), and capsule expanders (CEs) in stabilizing the lens capsule under different degrees of zonular dehiscence using a porcine model.

Understanding the Motion of Hard-shell Capsules in Dry Powder Inhalers.

The delivery of small drug particles from a dry powder inhaler (DPI) into the patient's peripheral airways requires the dispersion of the powder. In DPIs that contain a rotating pierced capsule, the capsule's motion is paramount to powder dispersion. Previous studies have simplified the capsule motion in an Aerolizer® inhaler as a constant rotation around a fixed center. The present work examines deviations from this simplified motion and describes the capsule collisions with the surrounding inhaler walls....

Enhanced Diagnosis of Severe Aortic Stenosis Using Artificial Intelligence: A Proof-of-Concept Study of 530,871 Echocardiograms.

Elevation of the intraocular pressure is associated with focal, topographical decreases in the OCT-A measured microvasculature in glaucoma: A proof-of concept.

A Prospective Study Evaluating the Clinical Utility of the Tag-Less Patency Capsule with Extended Time for Confirming Functional Patency.

Patency confirmation is useful for avoiding the retention of capsule endoscopy (CE). We first evaluated the clinical utility of the tag-less PillCamTM Patency Capsule (PPC) for up to 72 h after ingestion prospectively.

Use of artificial intelligence-based analytics from live colonoscopies to optimize the quality of the colonoscopy exam in real-time: proof of concept.

Developing a screening tool to recognise social determinants of health in Australian clinical settings.

Objective and importance of study: The importance of social determinants for individual health recovery outcomes is well recognised in public health. However, no succinct social health screening (SHS) tool exists that has been developed with information from clinicians and patients. This proof-of-concept study asked health consumer advocates, patients and clinicians about their attitudes towards social determinants of health (SDH) and the usefulness of an SHS tool for collecting these data for use in clinic...

Auxiliary Partial Autologous Liver Transplantation for High-selective Alveolar Echinococcosis: A Proof of Concept.

Shock Team Approach in Refractory Cardiogenic Shock Requiring Short-Term Mechanical Circulatory Support: A Proof of Concept.

Peri-operative role of continuous positive airway pressure in mitigating respiratory side effects associated with interscalene brachial plexus block: A proof-of-concept study.

Small-bowel capsule endoscopy in patients with celiac disease, axial vs. lateral/panoramic view: results from a prospective randomized trial.

Capsule enteroscopy (CE) is recommended in the management of complicated celiac disease (CD). However, published data are derived from axial- view capsule systems. No data are available about the use of the lateral/panoramic view capsules. This study aimed at evaluating the diagnostic yield (DY) and efficacy of the lateral/panoramic vs axial view capsule system in CD.

Sorption of PAHs to microplastic and their bioavailability and toxicity to marine copepods under co-exposure conditions.

Organic chemical pollutants associated with microplastic (MP) may represent an alternative exposure route for these chemicals to marine biota. However, the bioavailability of MP-sorbed organic pollutants under conditions where co-exposure occurs from the same compounds dissolved in the water phase has rarely been studied experimentally, especially where pollutant concentrations in the two phases are well characterized. Importantly, higher concentrations of organic pollutants on ingested MP may be less bioav...

Reversal of Collateral Ventilation Using Endobronchial Polymer Sealant in a Patient With Emphysema Undergoing Endoscopic Lung Volume Reduction (ELVR) With Valves: A Case Report and Proof of Concept.

Carbon source regulates polysaccharide capsule biosynthesis in Streptococcus pneumoniae.

The exopolysaccharide capsule of is an important virulence factor, but the mechanisms that regulate capsule thickness are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the effects of various exogenously supplied carbohydrates on capsule production and gene expression in several pneumococcal serotypes. Microscopy analyses indicated a near absence of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) when was grown in fructose. Moreover, serotype 7F pneumococci produced much less CPS than strains of other serotypes (6B, 6C, 9...

Capsular fibrosis: a review of prevention methods and management.

Opacification of the posterior capsule caused by residual lens epithelial cells (LEC) is still the most frequent long-term complication of cataract surgery. Beside the opacification of the visual axis with posterior capsule opacification (PCO), resulting in a decrease in visual function, fibrotic changes may also have a mechanical effect on intraocular lens (IOL) position such as axial shift, decentration, tilt and capsule striae. In this article, two types of capsular fibrosis are explored, on the one hand...

ROS-responsive "smart" polymeric conjugate: synthesis, characterization and proof-of-concept study.

New approaches integrating stimuli-responsive linkers into prodrugs are currently emerging. These "smart" prodrugs can enhance the effectivity of conventional prodrugs with promising clinical applicability. Oxidative stress is central to several diseases, including cancer. Therefore, the design of prodrugs that respond to ROS stimulus, allowing a selective drug release in this condition, is fairly encouraging. Aiming to investigate the ROS-responsiveness of prodrugs containing the ROS-cleavable moiety, Thio...
