Predatory Publishing in Orthopaedic Research.

The open-access model has changed the landscape of academic publishing over the last 20 years. An unfortunate consequence has been the advent of predatory publishing, which exploits the open-access model for monetary gain by collecting publishing fees from authors under the pretense of being a legitimate publication while providing little-to-no peer review. This study aims to investigate the predatory publishing phenomenon in orthopaedic literature.

Implementation of innovations in healthcare: radiotherapy as an example.

The implementation of innovations is considered necessary in healthcare, both for improving patient outcomes and services and to reduce costs. Two problems can occur during the implementation process: innovations that have not been properly evaluated in terms of patient outcomes or cost-effectiveness can sometimes spread quickly, whereas innovations that have shown to lead to significant improvements in a research study setting may struggle to find their way into clinical practice. Problems may also arise w...

Comparing gender discrimination and inequality in indie and traditional publishing.

In traditional publishing, female authors' titles command nearly half (45%) the price of male authors' and are underrepresented in more prestigious genres, and books are published by publishing houses, which determined whose books get published, subject classification, and retail price. In the last decade, the growth of digital technologies and sales platforms have enabled unprecedented numbers of authors to bypass publishers to publish and sell books. The rise of indie publishing (aka self-publishing) refl...

Innovations in energy expenditure assessment.

Optimal nutritional therapy has been associated with better clinical outcomes and requires providing energy as closed as possible to measured energy expenditure. We reviewed the current innovations in energy expenditure assessment in humans, focusing on indirect calorimetry and other new alternative methods.

Designing and testing an educational innovation.

Technology provides an opportunity to develop innovations to improve the way we teach. Developing educational innovations must be approached in a methodical and thorough manner to identify the educational gap and validate the innovation's success in filling the gap. A successful educational innovation requires a stepwise approach that includes needs assessment, design of intervention, testing and analysis, evaluation of intervention, and determination of learning retention.

The introduction of innovations in neurovascular care: Patient selection and randomized allocation.

Most neurovascular innovations have been introduced by using case series followed by observational studies. A better approach would be a pragmatic randomized trial. Two important aspects of trial design, patient selection and randomized allocation, remain poorly understood. We discuss the role trial methodology can play in the protection of patients being offered innovative treatments.

Innovations in CRISPR technology.

CRISPR-Cas9 is a versatile tool for genome engineering that has revolutionized biotechnology and is poised to impact medicine. Recent advances in the identification of unique CRISPR systems, as well as the re-engineering of the Cas9 protein for expanded function, has enabled the diversification of the CRISPR genome engineering toolbox. In this review, we highlight these innovations and discuss how advances in CRISPR technology can lead to breakthroughs in the field of gene therapy.

Mainstreaming implementation science into immunization systems in the decade of vaccines: a programmatic imperative for the African Region.

Several innovations that can improve immunization systems already exist. Some interventions target service consumers within communities to raise awareness, build trust, improve understanding, remind caregivers, reward service users, and improve communication. Other interventions target health facilities to improve access and quality of vaccination services among others. Despite available empirical evidence, there is a delay in translating innovations into routine practice by immunization programmes. Drawing...

Appraising the Uptake and Use of the IDEAL Framework and Recommendations: A Review of the Literature.

Evaluation of new surgical innovations is complex and variably regulated, and historically the quality of surgical studies has been criticized. The IDEAL (Idea, Development, Exploration, Assessment, Long-term monitoring) Framework was established to provide a pathway for evaluating surgical innovations at each stage of their development in order to produce high quality surgical research. Since the inception of IDEAL in 2009, there has been no assessment of its use. In this review, we look at the uptake and ...

Case Reports and Consent for Publishing in Rheumatology Journals: A Latin American Perspective.

Case reports have a long-standing tradition in the current rheumatology literature. We aimed to present the main points of view regarding the importance, meaning, and barriers of consent for publishing under the comprehensive protection of patients' rights within this genre. We encourage Latin American editors and authors of rheumatology journals to adopt the best ethical practices in the field, avoiding security and legal liabilities from a regional perspective.

Separation innovations.

Column technology is considered the heart of the chromatographic system, and hence progress in stationary-phase design is one of the main drivers of the field of separation science. One of the researchers that has greatly contributed to the field of liquid-phase separations, and more specifically with the development of polymer-monolithic columns, is Frantisek (Frank) Svec. Polymer-monolithic stationary phases are now considered as one of the great separation innovations realized over the last two decades. ...
