Celiac disease-associated Neisseria flavescens decreases mitochondrial respiration in CaCo-2 epithelial cells. Impact of Lactobacillus paracasei-CBA L74 on bacterial-induced cellular imbalance.

We previously identified a Neisseria flavescens (N. flavescens) strain in the duodenum of celiac disease (CD) patients that induced immune-inflammation in ex-vivo duodenal mucosal explants and in CaCo-2 cells. We also found that vesicular trafficking was delayed after the CD-immunogenic P31-43 gliadin peptide entered CaCo-2 cells and that Lactobacillus paracasei-CBA L74 (L. paracasei-CBA) supernatant reduced peptide entry. In this study, we evaluated if metabolism and trafficking was altered in CD-N.flavesc...

Phenibut (β-Phenyl-γ-Aminobutyric Acid): an Easily Obtainable "Dietary Supplement" With Propensities for Physical Dependence and Addiction.

Phenibut (β-phenyl-γ-aminobutyric acid) is a psychoactive GABA analogue currently being marketed online as an anxiolytic and nootropic dietary supplement. Its use is growing in popularity, but its pharmacological activity is well beyond that of a conventional nutritional supplement, and similar to that of a prescription strength sedative. This review will focus on the potential adversities of phenibut use and will discuss what treatment options may be beneficial to afflicted patients.

Binding activity to intestinal cells and transient colonization in mice of two Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei strains with high aggregation potential.

Surface properties like hydrophobicity, aggregation ability, adhesion to mucosal surfaces and epithelial cells and transit time are key features for the characterization of probiotic strains. In this study, we used two Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei strains (BGNJ1-64 and BGSJ2-8) strains which were previously described with very strong aggregation capacity. The aggregation promoting factor (AggLb) expressed in these strains showed high level of binding to collagen and fibronectin, components of ex...

Is diet management helpful in familial hypercholesterolemia?

Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic condition where low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor defects cause severe elevations of LDL cholesterol. As significant LDL-lowering effects are needed, medication is considered the cornerstone of therapy, and dietary therapy has received less emphasis. This review will re-visit older studies of diet intervention and new insights from genetic and mechanistic studies to determine the value of diet management for familial hypercholesterolemia patients.

Hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia as biochemical markers of disease in companion rabbits.

Inflammation has important effects on lipid metabolism, but the relationship between hyperlipidemia, inflammation, and disease remains unknown in rabbits. While rabbits are sensitive to dietary hypercholesterolemia, the etiology of hyperlipidemia when fed non-atherogenic diets is uncertain.
