Balanced crystalloid solutions induce less hyperchloremia than normal saline, but their role as primary fluid replacement for children undergoing surgery is unestablished. We hypothesized that balanced crystalloids induce less chloride and metabolic derangements than 0.9% saline solutions in children undergoing brain tumor resection.
Metabolic engineering has been an important approach for microbial bio-production. To produce bio-chemicals with engineered microorganisms, metabolic pathways have been edited using several common strategies, including gene disruption, gene overexpression, and gene attenuation. Here, we demonstrated metabolic channeling based on enzymatic metabolic enzyme ligation as a noteworthy approach for enhancing a desired metabolic flux. To achieve metabolic channeling , the metabolic enzymes should be in close proxi...
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is commonly observed among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, and hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) is a promising glucose-sparing osmotic agent for PD. However, the biocompatibility of a HPG-based PD solution (HPG) in subjects with MetS has not been investigated. This study compared the local and systemic effects of a HPG solution with conventional Physioneal (PYS) and Icodextrin (ICO) PD solutions in rats with MetS. Obese type 2 diabetic ZSF1 rats received a daily intraperitoneal ...
Metabolism is a fundamental biological process composed of a series of reactions catalyzed by metabolic enzymes. Emerging evidence demonstrates that the aberrant signaling in cancer cells induces nonmetabolic functions of metabolic enzymes in many instrumental cellular activities, which involve metabolic enzyme-mediated protein post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation, acetylation, and succinylation. In the most well-researched literatures, metabolic enzymes phosphorylate proteins rather th...
The morphological changes induced by bio-incompatible peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions are well known. However, the morphological damage induced by long-term low-glucose degradation product (GDP), pH-neutral solutions has not been reported in detail. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of pH-neutral PD solutions on morphological and functional changes in the peritoneal membrane.
Density of microplastics has been regarded as the primary property that affect the distribution and bioavailability of microplastics in the water column. For measuring the density of microplastis, we developed a simple and rapid method based on density gradient solutions. In this study, we tested four solvents to make the density gradient solutions, i.e., ethanol (0.8 g/cm), ultrapure water (1.0 g/cm), saturated NaI (1.8 g/cm) and ZnCl (1.8 g/cm). Density of microplastics was measured via observing ...
The free solvent-based (FSB) model and osmotic pressure was used to probe the ion binding and protein hydration for self-crowded bovine serum albumin in 0.15 M NaF, NaCl, NaI and NaSCN solutions. All experiments were conducted with solutions at pH 7.4. The regressed results of the FSB model behavior to the measured osmotic pressure was excellent, albeit, the osmotic pressure data for NaSCN was noisy. The resulting ion binding and hydration were realistic values and the covariance of the two parameters was e...
The influence of different irrigation solutions, in conjunction with wet-to-moist cleansing, on the reduction of sessile, non-planktonic bacteria which colonise wounds, has not been investigated. In this study, the antibacterial effect of different irrigation solutions, during a 20-minute wet-to-moist cleansing, has been evaluated in chronic wounds.
The Fenton reaction, Fe(HO) + HO → Oxidizing product, is of major importance in biology as the major cause of oxidative stress, and in advanced oxidation processes. It is commonly assumed that ·OH is the product of the Fenton reaction. The results presented herein point out that ·OH is indeed the oxidizing product in acidic solutions for [Fe(HO)] > [HO]; Fe is the active oxidizing product in neutral solutions; in slightly acidic solutions for [HO] > [Fe(HO)] a mixture of ·OH and Fe is formed. However C...
In HIV-infected patients on combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), lipodystrophy shares many similarities with metabolic syndrome, but only metabolic syndrome has objective classification criteria. We examined adipose tissue changes related to lipodystrophy and metabolic syndrome to clarify whether it may be acceptable to focus diagnosis on metabolic syndrome rather than lipodystrophy.
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by obesity, hyperglycemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Metabolic syndrome is associated with osteoarthritis (OA), but it is unclear if the association is attributable to increased mechanical loading on joints caused by obesity or other aspects of metabolic syndrome. Here we examined the effects of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and the gut microbiome on load-induced OA.
Cardiac hypertrophy is characterised by a shift in metabolic substrate utilisation, but the molecular events underlying the metabolic remodelling remain poorly understood. We explored metabolic remodelling and mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiac hypertrophy and investigated the cardioprotective effects of choline.
The risk of metabolic syndrome can be influenced by inadequate vitamin D levels, and exposure to sunlight is the main external source of vitamin D. The present study assessed the influence of environmental, biological, and nutritional factors in relation to seasonal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentration in individuals with metabolic syndrome.
To study whether male childlessness is associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) and diabetes.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in industrialized nations and is strongly associated with the metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of NAFLD continues to rise along with the epidemic of the metabolic syndrome. Metabolic homeostasis is linked to the circadian clock (rhythm), with multiple signaling pathways in organs regulated by circadian clock genes, and recent studies of circadian clock gene functions suggest that disruption of the circadian rhythm is associa...
The gut microbiota represent a highly complex ecosystem comprised of approximately 1000 species that forms a mutualistic relationship with the human host. A critical attribute of the microbiota is high species diversity, which provides system robustness through overlapping and redundant metabolic capabilities. The gradual loss of bacterial diversity has been associated with a broad array of gut pathologies and diseases including malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease. We formulated a...
Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common malignancies among women worldwide, which is indeed associated with metabolic reprogramming. However, BC is a very complex and heterogeneous disease, which can relate with the changes in metabolic profiles during BC progression. Hence, investigating the metabolic alterations during BC stage progression may reveal the deregulated pathways and useful metabolic signatures of BC. To demonstrate the metabolic insights, we opted H NMR spectroscopy based metabolomics of...
Plasma-Lyte 148 is a balanced, crystalloid intravenous (IV) fluid which is both calcium-free and isotonic. It prevents the hyperchloraemic metabolic acidosis and iatrogenic hyponatraemia seen with use of 0.9% sodium chloride and hypotonic solutions respectively. However, data on compatibility with commonly used drugs is lacking.
metabolic syndrome (MS) components are independent risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, major causes of mortality in the world.
To evaluate the correlation between bone marrow cellularity (BMC) and metabolic activity in healthy subjects and to see whether yellow marrow is indeed metabolically quiescent. Because metabolic activity can be assumed to reflect vascularity, we assessed the relationship between regional metabolic activity and geographic frequency of metastases as noted in the literature.
Metabolic networks have evolved to reduce the disruption of key metabolic pathways by the establishment of redundant genes/reactions. Synthetic lethals in metabolic networks provide a window to study these functional redundancies. While synthetic lethals have been previously studied in different organisms, there has been no study on how the synthetic lethals are shaped during adaptation/evolution.
The role of orexin-A in regulating metabolic homeostasis has been recognized, but its association with antipsychotic-induced metabolic abnormalities remains unclear. We investigated the association between orexin-A levels and metabolic syndrome in patients with schizophrenia treated with clozapine or less obesogenic antipsychotics compared with nonpsychiatric controls.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between educational level as a surrogate marker of socioeconomic status and the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS).
The dramatic increase in global prevalence of metabolic disease is inexplicable when considering only environmental or only genetic factors, leading to the need to explore the possible roles of epigenetic factors. A great deal of progress has been made in this interdisciplinary field in recent years, with many studies investigating various aspects of the metabolic syndrome and its associated epigenetic changes. Rodent models of metabolic diseases have been particularly illuminating due to the ability to lev...
Atopic dermatitis (AD) may be associated with the metabolic syndrome and by that carry an increased risk of cardio-vascular disease. Our objective was to provide an update on current knowledge of the association between AD and metabolic syndrome, including each component of the metabolic syndrome. A systematic literature review was performed to identify studies investigating the association between metabolic syndrome and AD from PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library in accordance with the Preferred Repor...
