Trends in Publications on Medical Cannabis from the Year 2000.

Widespread use of cannabis as a drug and passage of legislation on its use should lead to an increase in the number of scientific publications on cannabis. The aim of this study was to compare trends in scientific publication for papers on medical cannabis, papers on cannabis in general, and all papers between the years 2000 and 2017. A search of PubMed and Web of Science was conducted. The overall number of scientific publications in PubMed increased 2.5-fold. In contrast, the number of publications on can...

An analysis of retractions of dental publications.

To comprehensively report on the characteristics of retracted publications in the field of dentistry.

MeSH qualifiers and types of publications as well as the occurrence frequency of relations within publications can be useful for a better sentence-level extraction of biomedical relations from scientific literature.

How Should Biobanks Prioritize and Diversify Biosample Collections? A 40-Year Scientific Publication Trend Analysis by the Type of Biosample.

Biobanks are infrastructures for large-scale biology innovation. Governance of biobanks can be usefully informed by studies of publication trends, for example, on the types of biosamples employed in scientific publications. We examined trends in each of the serum, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC), buffy coat, tissue, and gut microbiome biosample-related scientific publications over the past 40 years, using data between 1977 and 2016 from the Scopus database. We found that the number of tissu...

Update on Misrepresentation of Research Publications Among Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Applicants.

Our 2 previous studies (1999, 2007) examining misrepresentation of research publications among orthopaedic residency applicants revealed rates of misrepresentation of 18.0% and 20.6%, respectively. As the residency selection process has become more competitive, the number of applicants who list publications has increased. The purpose of this study was to determine current rates of research misrepresentation by orthopaedic surgery applicants.

A snapshot of translational research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH): A case study using behavioral and social science research awards and Clinical and Translational Science Awards funded publications.

The translation of biomedical research from basic knowledge to application has been a priority at the National Institute of Health (NIH) for many years. Tracking the progress of scientific research and knowledge through the translational process is difficult due to variation in the definition of translational research as well as the identification of benchmarks for the spread and application of biomedical research; quantitatively tracking this process is even more difficult. Using a simple and reproducible ...

Highly visible sepsis publications from 2012 to 2017: Analysis and comparison of altmetrics and bibliometrics.

We sought to delineate highly visible publications related to sepsis. Within these subsets, elements of altmetrics performance, including mentions on Twitter, and the correlation between altmetrics and conventional citation counts were ascertained.

Connectome verification: inter-rater and connection reliability of tract-tracing-based intrinsic hypothalamic connectivity.

Structural connectomics supports understanding aspects of neuronal dynamics and brain functions. Conducting metastudies of tract-tracing publications is one option to generate connectome databases by collating neuronal connectivity data. Meanwhile, it is a common practice that the neuronal connections and their attributes of such retrospective data collations are extracted from tract-tracing publications manually by experts. As the description of tract-tracing results is often not clear-cut and the document...

History of Publications from the American Otological Society: A Celebration of the 150-Year History of the American Otological Society.

: The American Otological Society (AOS) has been on the forefront of advancing the science of auditory and vestibular physiology, and art of ear medicine since its founding in 1868. For 150 years, through its publications, the AOS has provided a critical forum to debate these advances, highlighting treatment successes and failures, and served a place to celebrate its history. This historical review provides an overview of the publications of the AOS since its founding: the Transactions of the annual meeting...

Medical Student and Resident Authored Publications in Academic Medicine From 2002 to 2016: A Growing Trend and Its Implications.

The extent of medical trainees' engagement in scholarly medical education publication is not well described. This study sought to quantify the prevalence of medical student- and resident-authored medical education publications over 15 years, a benchmark essential for understanding current and future trends in trainee scholarship.

Utilization of a Wide Array of Nonvalidated Outcome Scales in Pediatric Orthopaedic Publications: Can't We All Measure the Same Thing?

Clinical changes are best evaluated with standardized, validated outcomes, including both patient-reported outcome measures and surgeon-reported outcome measures (PROMs and SROMs). The purpose of this study was to describe the spectrum of outcome measures used in pediatric orthopaedic publications over the past 10 years and to determine the proportion that are in fact age-appropriate, validated, and appropriately applied in terms of condition and population.

Minimal Data Reporting Standards for Serological Testing for Histocompatibility.

Histocompatibility testing, and HLA antibody screening in particular, varies in practice among laboratories. Currently, standards are lacking regarding the reporting of testing methods in publications. It is essential that scientific methods are rigorously and transparently described upon publication, so that results can be accurately interpreted and independently corroborated. Additionally, this would allow work groups to compile diverse data to achieve clinically significant conclusions from meta-analyses...

Food security in indigenous and peasant populations: a systematic review.

Food security and the vulnerability among indigenous and peasant populations has become a topic of interest to public health all around the world, leading to the investigation about measurement, classification and factors that determine it. This systematic review aims to describe the situation of food security in indigenous and peasant communities, and the methods used for evaluation. The literature search was performed on the Pub Med (5), ScienceDirect (221) and Scopus (377) databases searching for publica...

National Center for Health Statistics Data Presentation Standards for Proportions.

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) disseminates information on a broad range of health topics through diverse publications. These publications must rely on clear and transparent presentation standards that can be broadly and efficiently applied. Standards are particularly important for large, cross-cutting reports where estimates cannot be individually evaluated and indicators of precision cannot be included alongside the estimates.

Comparison of Scientific Publications from Three Different Clinical Disciplines of German Universities.

Scientific publications are important for the advancement in medicine. Surgical disciplines including cardiac surgery are frequently considered not scientifically leading. However, a specific comparison between surgical and nonsurgical disciplines has not yet been performed. We thus compared scientific output of German departments of cardiac surgery with nonsurgical cardiology departments and surgical departments not addressing the heart (general surgery) of 34 universities in Germany.

Impact of the economic crisis on pain research: a bibliometric analysis of pain research publications from Ireland, Greece, and Portugal between 1997 and 2017.

Background and aims The recent economic crisis started in the USA in 2008 but quickly had worldwide impact. Ireland, Greece, and Portugal were in economic distress in 2009 and received rescue monetary packages from the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the following years. The geography of references in elite articles: Which countries contribute to the archives of knowledge?

This study asks the question on which national "shoulders" the world's top-level research stands. Traditionally, the number of citations to national papers has been the evaluative measures of national scientific standings. We raise a different question: instead of analyzing the citations to a countries' articles (the forward view), we examine references to prior publications from specific countries cited in the most elite publications (the backward-citing-view). "Elite publications" are operationalized as t...

Implementation of a Research Information Management System in a Pediatric Hospital.

Faculty publications have been collected in universities, health, and medical institutions for many years, and Cincinnati Children's is no exception. Since 1949, a yearly list of faculty publications was manually compiled using multiple data sources and disseminated by the Edward L. Pratt Research Library. Products to centralize faculty publication collection and analysis with bibliometric tools are growing in popularity. This article will review the collaborative decision to choose a Research Information M...
