Rational Kinetics Control toward Universal Growth of 2D Vertically Stacked Heterostructures.

The rational control of the nucleation and growth kinetics to enable the growth of 2D vertical heterostructure remains a great challenge. Here, an in-depth study is provided toward understanding the growth mechanism of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) vertical heterostructures in terms of the nucleation and kinetics, where active clusters with a high diffusion barrier will induce the nucleation on top of the TMDC templates to realize vertical heterostructures. Based on this mechanism, in the experim...

In Situ Synchrotron X-ray Characterization Shining Light on the Nucleation and Growth Kinetics of Colloidal Nanoparticles.

Rational synthesis of colloidal nanoparticles with desirable properties relies on precise control over the nucleation and growth kinetics, which is still barely understood. The recent development of in situ high energy synchrotron X-ray techniques offers an excellent opportunity to quantitatively monitor the growth trajectories of colloidal nanoparticle in real time under real reaction conditions. The time-resolved, quantitative data of the growing colloidal nanoparticles are unique to unpuzzle the mechanis...

Probing the mechanical properties of vertically-stacked ultrathin graphene/Al2O3 heterostructures.

The superior intrinsic mechanical properties of graphene have been widely studied and utilized to enhance the mechanical properties of various composite materials. However, it is still unclear how heterostructures incorporating graphene behave, and to what extent graphene influences their mechanical response. In this work, a series of graphene/Al2O3 composite films were fabricated via atomic layer deposition of Al2O3 on graphene, and their mechanical behavior was studied using an experimental-computational ...

Edge Segregated Polymorphism in 2D Molybdenum Carbide.

Molybdenum carbide (Mo C), a class of unterminated MXene, is endowed with rich polymorph chemistry, but the growth conditions of the various polymorphs are not understood. Other than the most commonly observed T-phase Mo C, little is known about other phases. Here, Mo C crystals are successfully grown consisting of mixed polymorphs and polytypes via a diffusion-mediated mechanism, using liquid copper as the diffusion barrier between the elemental precursors of Mo and C. By controlling the thickness of the c...

Impact of Polymer Enrichment at the Crystal-Liquid Interface on Crystallization Kinetics of Amorphous Solid Dispersions.

Amorphous solid dispersions have been widely used as an effective formulation strategy in the oral delivery of poorly soluble drugs. However, one of the main challenges in the development of amorphous drugs is to maintain their physical stability. The underlying mechanism of amorphous drugs crystallized in polymeric matrices is still poorly understood. In this study, we report the phenomenon of polymer enrichment at the crystal-liquid interface during the crystallization of griseofulvin (GSF) in the presenc...

Objectives Given the importance of the study, its purpose was to determine the effect of rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on anxiety and resilience in students. Methods Students admitted to the counseling centers of Ilam University were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Using convenient sampling method, 30 subjects were selected and randomly assigned to either REBT tests or a con...

The number of active metabolic pathways is bounded by the number of cellular constraints at maximal metabolic rates.

Growth rate is a near-universal selective pressure across microbial species. High growth rates require hundreds of metabolic enzymes, each with different nonlinear kinetics, to be precisely tuned within the bounds set by physicochemical constraints. Yet, the metabolic behaviour of many species is characterized by simple relations between growth rate, enzyme expression levels and metabolic rates. We asked if this simplicity could be the outcome of optimisation by evolution. Indeed, when the growth rate is ma...

In this study, two different SACs [Vertise Flow (VF), Fusio Liquid Dentin (FLD)] and five different bonding systems [Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CUB), Single Bond Universal (SBU), All Bond Universal (ABU), Prime Bond Universal (PBU), Futurabond U (FBU)] were used. A total of 22 groups were created ...

Experimental Investigation on Vertically-Oriented Graphene Grown in a Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition Process.

Vertically-oriented graphene with 3D architectures has been proved to exhibit unique properties and their particular morphology has been realized by researchers to be crucial for their performances in practical applications. In this study, we investigated the morphology evolution of VG films synthesized by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process, including porous graphene film, graphene wall, and graphene forest. This study reveals that the morphology of VG is controlled by a combinati...

High prevalence of growth plate gene variants in children with familial short stature treated with growth hormone.

Familial short stature (FSS) is a term describing a growth disorder that is vertically transmitted. Milder forms may result from the combined effect of multiple genes, more severe short stature is suggestive of a monogenic condition. The etiology of most FSS cases has not been thoroughly elucidated to date.

The carbonation kinetics of calcium hydroxide nanoparticles: A Boundary Nucleation and Growth description.

The reaction of Ca(OH) with CO to form CaCO (carbonation process) is of high interest for construction materials, environmental applications and art preservation. Here, the "Boundary Nucleation and Growth" model (BNGM) was adopted for the first time to consider the effect of the surface area of Ca(OH) nanoparticles on the carbonation kinetics.

GHB614 x T304-40 x GHB119 x COT102 Cotton: Protein Expression Analyses of Field Grown Samples.

Food and feed safety assessment is not enhanced by performing protein expression analysis on stacked trait products. The expression levels of six proteins in cotton matrices from four single cotton events and three conventionally stacked trait cotton products are reported. Three proteins were for insect control, two proteins confer herbicide tolerance, and one protein was a transformation selectable marker. The cotton matrices were produced at three US, five Brazil and two Argentina field trials. Similar pr...

Symmetry-Controlled Reversible Photovoltaic Current Flow in Ultrathin All 2D Vertically Stacked Graphene/MoS/WS/Graphene Devices.

Atomically thin vertical heterostructures are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications, especially for flexible and transparent technologies. Here, we show how ultrathin all two-dimensional vertical-stacked type-II heterostructure devices can be assembled using only materials grown by chemical vapor deposition, with graphene (Gr) as top and bottom electrodes and MoS/WS as the active semiconductor layers in the middle. Furthermore, we show that the stack symmetry, which dictates the type-II direc...

Adsorption and release kinetics of growth factors on barrier membranes for guided tissue/bone regeneration: A systematic review.

Guided bone / tissue regeneration (GBR/GTR) procedures are necessary to improve conditions for implant placement. These techniques in turn can be enhanced by using growth factors (GFs) such as bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2) and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) to accelerate regeneration. The aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate the GF loading and release kinetics of barrier membranes.

Effect of Hepatitis C Virus Coinfection on the Progression of Vertically Acquired Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection During Childhood and Adolescence.

Data for a total of 57 patients vertically coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) and 365 HIV-monoinfected patients were compared until their transition to adult care. No differences regarding the dynamics of CD4 and/or CD8 T-cell counts during childhood were found. The coexistence of HCV does not increase the risk of disease progression in vertically HIV-infected patients.

Effect of layer and stacking sequence in simultaneously grown 2H and 3R WS2 atomic layers.

In two-dimensional layered materials, layer number and stacking order have strong effects on the optical and electronic properties. Tungsten disulfide (WS2) crystal, as one important member among transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), has been usually prepared in a layered 2H prototype structure with space group P63/mmc (D6h4) in spite of many other expected ones such as 3R. Here, we repor...

The Effect of Vertically Yoked Prisms on Binocular Vision and Accommodation.

Vertically yoked prisms have been used in treatment of binocular vision dysfunction despite minimal supporting evidence. In people with normal binocular vision, the impact on phorias has been assessed but not the impact on accommodation, accommodation vergence interactions, or the horopter. We found that vertically yoked prisms have minor effects during short-term wear in young adults.

Vertical Self-assembly of Polarized Phage Nanostructure for Energy Harvesting.

Controlling the shape, geometry, density and orientation of nanomaterials is critical to fabricate functional devices. However, there is limited control over the morphological and directional characteristics of pre-synthesized nanomaterials, which makes them unsuitable for developing devices for practical applications. Here, we address this challenge by demonstrating vertically aligned and polarized piezoelectric nanostructures from pre-synthesized biological piezoelectric nanofibers, M13 phage, with contro...

A data analytics approach for rational design of nanomedicines with programmable drug release.

Drug delivery vehicles can improve the functional efficacy of existing antimicrobial therapies by improving biodistribution and targeting. A critical property of such nanomedicine formulations is their ability to control the release kinetics of their payloads. The combination of (and interactions between) polymer, drug, and nanoparticle properties gives rise to nonlinear behavioral relationships and a large data space. These factors complicate both first-principles modeling and screening of nanomedicine for...

Controlled growth of layer-by-layer assembled polyelectrolyte multilayer films under high electric fields.

The application of an external electric Field (E-Field) to control layer-by-layer (LBL) growth of polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEM) typically involves hydrolysis of the water at the electrodes. We hypothesize that by isolating the electrodes from contact with the water, high E-Fields could be used to control the conformation of the polyelectrolytes in the solution phase and thus, enable non-chemical control of the LBL growth.

Stacked Lateral Thigh Perforator Flap as a Novel Option for Autologous Breast Reconstruction.

Autologous breast reconstruction using perforator flaps offers excellent outcomes, minimizes donor-site morbidity, and allows for precise donor-site selection. The deep inferior epigastric artery perforator, profunda artery perforator, and gluteal artery perforator flaps along with the stacked flap technique are the most common options. This study reports the first series of the stacked lateral thigh perforator flap.

Sequence-Regulated Supracolloidal Copolymers via Copolymerization-Like Coassembly of Binary Mixtures of Patchy Nanoparticles.

Synthetic copolymers of molecular systems serve as an inspiration for creation of one-dimensional copolymer-like superstructures via coassembly of anisometric nanoparticles. In contrast to the covalent and molecular copolymers, the details of formation mechanisms of copolymer-like superstructures, as well as the factors determining their length and the sequences of arranged nanoparticles, are still poorly understood. Herein, we propose a joint theoretical-computational framework to probe into the coassembly...

A precise control of the size, density and distribution of metal nanoparticles dispersed on functional oxide supports is critical for promoting catalytic activity and stability in renewable energy and catalysis devices. Here, we measure the growth kinetics of individual Co particles ex-solved on SrTi0.75Co0.25O3-δ polycrystalline thin films under a high vacuum, and at various temperatures and grain sizes using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The ex-solution preferentially occurs at grain boundari...

Detection of preterm birth in electrohysterogram signals based on wavelet transform and stacked sparse autoencoder.

Based on electrohysterogram, this paper designed a new method using wavelet-based nonlinear features and stacked sparse autoencoder for preterm birth detection. For each sample, three level wavelet decomposition of a time series was performed. Approximation coefficients at level 3 and detail coefficients at levels 1, 2 and 3 were extracted. Sample entropy of the detail coefficients at levels 1, 2, 3 and approximation coefficients at level 3 were computed as features. The classifier was constructed based on ...

Detection of Mg-dependent, coaxial stacking rearrangements in a bulged three-way DNA junction by single-molecule FRET.

Three-way helical junctions (3WJs) arise in genetic processing, and they have architectural and functional roles in structured nucleic acids. An internal bulge at the junction core allows the helical domains to become oriented into two possible, coaxially stacked conformers. Here, the helical stacking arrangements for a series of bulged, DNA 3WJs were examined using ensemble fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and single-molecule FRET (smFRET) approaches. The 3WJs varied according to the GC conten...
