Randomized Controlled Trial of the Safety and Immunogenicity of Revaccination With Tetanus-Diphtheria-Acellular Pertussis Vaccine (Tdap) in Adults 10 Years After a Previous Dose.

Reduced-antigen-content tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is recommended in many countries for boosting immunity in adolescents and adults. Although immunity to these antigens wanes with time, currently available Tdap products are not labeled for repeat administration in the United States.

Immunogenicity and safety of a second booster dose of an acellular pertussis vaccine combined with reduced antigen content diphtheria-tetanus toxoids 10 years after a first booster in adolescence: An open, phase III, non-randomized, multi-center study.

Pertussis is a highly contagious disease, for which periodic peaks in incidence and an increasing number of outbreaks have been observed over the last decades. The reduced-antigen-content tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) can be used to boost individuals aged ≥10 years, vaccinated in infancy with a diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP), to reduce pertussis morbidity and maintain protection against diphtheria and tetanus throughout adolescence and adulthood. This phase ...

New Zealand has funded the administration of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine during pregnancy to prevent infant pertussis since 2013. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of Tdap vaccine administered to pregnant women as part of a national maternal immunisation programme.

In vitro antioxidant capacities of eight different kinds of apples and their effects on lipopolysaccharide-induced oxidative damage in mice.

In the present study, the DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activity of eight types of apples decreased (P < 0.05) during the 70-day storage at 4°C. The Fushi (F2) apples from Xin Jiang showed the highest radical scavenging activity. For in vivo study, 40 male Kunming mice (body weight 20-25 g) were selected and randomly assigned to four groups (10 mice per group). The F2 groups (F2S, F2 + sterile saline and F2L, F2 + lipopolysaccharide) were administered with 0.3 mL F2 filtrate via gastric intubation dail...

Fluoro-urodynamic Image Interpretation Is Not Altered by Using Dilute Intravesical Contrast.

To determine if using one 250 mL bottle of intravesical contrast followed by sterile saline alters interpretation of fluoroscopic images during fluoro-urodynamics MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were randomized to receive 250 mL of intravesical contrast followed by sterile saline until maximal cystometric capacity (MCC) versus non-dilute intravesical contrast alone during fluoro-urodynamics. Potential of using sodium bicarbonate as external carbon source to cultivate microalga in non-sterile condition.

In this study, a saline-alkaline tolerant microalgal strain was isolated and identified as Chlorella sp. LPF. This strain was able to grow at pH values up to 10 and at salinities up to 5%, and tolerated to 80 g L of sodium bicarbonate. The utilization of bicarbonate as carbon source significantly promoted microalgal growth and lipid production. In the non-sterile cultivation supplying with 80 g L of sodium bicarbonate, the microalgal growth had no difference with their growth in the sterile medium; ...

Tdap vaccination during pregnancy to protect newborns from pertussis infection.

Nowadays whooping cough (pertussis) represents one of the most prevalent vaccine-preventable diseases in Western countries; even more, it is currently on rise. In many countries, the use of acellular pertussis adult vaccine in combination with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids (Tdap) is recommended for women during pregnancy to protect newborns in the first months of life, when they are too young to be vaccinated. In Italy, vaccination of women during the third trimester of pregnancy is included in the nationa...

Irrigation after Laparoscopic Power Morcellation and the Dispersal of Leiomyoma Cells: a Pilot Study.

To evaluate if copious irrigation and suctioning after electro-mechanical power morcellation will reduce myoma cell dissemination, and if there is a difference between sterile water and normal saline.

Reconstruction of cranioplasty using the thoracodorsal artery perforator (TDAP) flap: A case series.

Complex defects resulting in ablation of the scalp, the calvaria, the dura, and the underlying brain are still challenging. These defects require cranioplasty to restore the bone cosmetic and functional roles and free-flap soft tissue reconstruction to prevent cranioplasty exposure and further infection. Different materials have been used in cranioplasty, while different free flaps have been proposed in those cases. In this article, we present a case series of cranioplasty reconstruction with thoracodorsal ...

FZP determines grain size and sterile lemma fate in rice.

In grass, the spikelet is a unique inflorescence structure that directly determines grain yield. Despite a great deal of research, the molecular mechanisms behind spikelet development are not fully understood. In the study, FZP encodes an ERF domain protein, and functions in grain size and sterile lemma identity. Mutation of FZP causes smaller grains and degenerated sterile lemmas. The small fzp-12 grains were caused by a reduction in cell number and size in the hulls. Interestingly, the sterile lemma under...

Germ cell depletion in zebrafish leads to incomplete masculinization of the brain.

Zebrafish sex differentiation is under the control of multiple genes, but also relies on germ cell number for gonadal development. Morpholino and chemical mediated germ cell depletion leads to sterile male development in zebrafish. In this study we produced sterile males, using a dead end gene morpholino, to determine gonadal-brain interactions. Germ cell depletion following dnd inhibition downregulated the germ cell markers, vasa and ziwi, and later the larvae developed as sterile males. Despite lacking pr...

Break Scrub to Take That Phone Call?

The American College of Surgeons reports that 60% of the hundreds of thousands of surgical site infections occurring annually are preventable. The practice of surgeons taking phone calls while remaining sterile in the operating field is often accomplished by interposing a sterile disposable towel between the phone and their glove. After completing the call, surgeons resume operating. The purpose of our study is to test the conceptual idea of whether bacteria transmit from an inanimate object, such as a tele...

Tracing the sources of iodine species in a non-saline wastewater.

There are two types of wastewater in Hong Kong, non-saline and saline wastewaters. When it comes to disinfection, iodide is an important inorganic ion in concern because it may involve in the formation of iodinated disinfection byproducts, which show significantly higher toxicity than their brominated and chlorinated analogues. In this study, it was found that a non-saline wastewater in Hong Kong contained an unexpected high level of iodine. To trace the iodine sources of this non-saline wastewater, the inf...

Sterile Inflammation Fuels Gastric Cancer.

Constitutively activated NF-κB signaling has long been known to be oncogenic. In this issue of Immunity, O'Reilly et al. (2018) unveil a link between loss of NF-κB1, aberrant STAT1 signaling, sterile inflammation, and the increased expression of immune checkpoint molecules as cancer drivers.

Quality Control-Sterile Compounding: Analytical Methods. Density Determinations and Quality Control in Nonsterile and Sterile Compounding.

One is generally introduced to density in the pharmacy calculations class with exercises in converting weights to liquid measurements, etc. However, density has far more applications than that. Density calculations can be utilized in actual compounding for weights and measures, and it is an easy-to-use method for quality control. Density/specific gravity is used in both nonsterile and sterile compounding, as in using automated compounders for parenteral nutrition solutions. Equipment available is both manua...

Feasibility of using the radiation-based sterile insect technique (SIT) to control the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae Gmelin (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Iran.

Bactrocera oleae is one of the most hazardous pests threatening olive orchards in Iran. SIT is an environment-friendly system of pest control based on releasing sterile males able to compete with wild males to mate with wild females. To determine sterile doses of radiation, pupae were irradiated to the doses of 0-160 Gy. Doses of 90-100 Gy were found optimal providing the necessary sterilization without severely impairing the competitiveness of the irradiated males in mating.

Balanced Crystalloids Versus Saline for Perioperative Intravenous Fluid Administration in Children Undergoing Neurosurgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Balanced crystalloid solutions induce less hyperchloremia than normal saline, but their role as primary fluid replacement for children undergoing surgery is unestablished. We hypothesized that balanced crystalloids induce less chloride and metabolic derangements than 0.9% saline solutions in children undergoing brain tumor resection.

Agitated saline contrast echocardiography reveals a systemic-to-pulmonary venous shunt.

Contrast echocardiography with agitated saline is used to assess mainly the existence of interatrial communication. We report a case of a 26-year-old woman, with a "port-a-cath" central venous line, who had an unusual finding in agitated saline contrast echocardiography. Multimodality imaging revealed occlusion of superior vena cava and a systemic-to-pulmonary venous shunt.

Abnormal saline's swan song.

We previously suggested that choosing balanced solutions over normal saline for fluid therapy might benefit patients. After all, administration of NaCl 0.9% invokes metabolic acidosis and hyperchloraemia which was linked to renal failure and mortality in retrospective studies. Two large randomized controlled clinical trials now confirm this signal. Both in intensive care patients and in the setting of emergency medicine, balanced solutions were shown to reduce the incidence of MAKE30, a composite end point ...
