Autoimmune hepatitis association with single nucleotide polymorphism of interleukin-2, but not interferon-gamma.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic inflammation in hepatocellular tissues associated with circulating autoantibodies. Imbalance in T-cells population and dysregulation in several cytokine profiles has been implicated in pathogenesis of AIH. This study was performed to assess potential association of AIH with interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) genes single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG prevents epithelial barrier dysfunction induced by interferon-gamma and fecal supernatants from irritable bowel syndrome patients in human intestinal enteroids and colonoids.

Disruption of intestinal barrier homeostasis is an important pathogenic factor in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) improves IBS symptoms through unclear mechanisms. Previous studies utilizing colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines showed that LGG metabolites prevented interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) induced barrier damage but the model employed limited these findings. We aimed to interrogate the protective effects of LGG on epithelial barrier function using huma...

Gamma oscillations in the entorhinal-hippocampal circuit underlying memory and dementia.

Gamma oscillations that occur within the entorhinal cortex-hippocampal circuitry play important roles in the formation and retrieval of memory in healthy brains. Recent studies report that gamma oscillations are impaired in the entorhinal-hippocampal circuit of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients and AD animal models. Here we review the latest advancements in studies of entorhinal-hippocampal gamma oscillations in healthy memory and dementia. This review is especially salient for readers in Alzheimer's resear...

Differential expression of interferon-gamma, IL-4 and IL-10 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells during early pregnancy of the bovine.

Maternal systemic immune response is regulated by conceptus-derived signals through peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) via blood circulation during early pregnancy in cattle. In this study, the PBMCs from day 18 in non-pregnant cows and days 14, 18 and 30 in pregnant cows were used to explore the expression of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin 4 (IL-4) and IL-10, and the plasma progesterone (P4) concentration was also determined. The results showed that the expression levels of mRNA and the pro...

Decreased resting gamma activity in adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

To delineate task-free gamma activity in adult ADHD and healthy control subjects based on high-density EEG recordings. Relationship of gamma activity with symptom severity was also examined, since gamma activity is considered as an index of network functions in the brain that underlie higher-order cognitive processes.

Association Between the Interferon Gamma 874 T/A Polymorphism and the Severity of Valvular Damage in Patients with Rheumatic Heart Disease.

Interferon gamma (IFN-γ) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays an important role in modulating almost all phases of the immune response and may be responsible for the increased valvular fibrosis and calcification in the pathogenesis of rheumatic heart disease (RHD). The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the IFN-γ +874 T/A polymorphism and the severity of valvular damage in the Turkish population. The IFN-γ genotypes were determined in 152 RHD patients and 151 healt...

Recombinant Duck Interferon Gamma Inhibits H5N1 Influenza Virus Replication In Vitro and In Vivo.

The highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus (AIV) is widespread in waterfowl, causing enormous economic losses and posing a significant threat to public health. An increasing number of reagents have been identified to prevent the spread of influenza; however, there have been no reports on the anti-H5N1 effects of duck interferons, which exhibit antiviral activity against other viruses. Our aim was to investigate the antiviral effects of purified duck interferons. In this study, we successfully cloned a...

Interferon lambda is required for interferon gamma-expressing NK cell responses but does not afford antiviral protection during acute and persistent murine cytomegalovirus infection.

Interferon lambda (IFNλ) is a group of cytokines that belong to the IL-10 family. They exhibit antiviral activities against certain viruses during infection of the liver and mucosal tissues. Here we report that IFNλ restricts in vitro replication of the β-herpesvirus murine cytomegalovirus (mCMV). However, IFNλR1-deficient (Ifnλr1-/-) mice were not preferentially susceptible to mCMV infection in vivo during acute infection after systemic or mucosal challenge, or during virus persistence in the mucosa. ...

Mounting Evidence for Interferon-gamma Release Assay Use in Young Children.

Validation and comparison of ELISA kits to measure interferon gamma responses in QuantiFERON cultural supernatants for diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Much effort has been made to reduce the cost of LTBI diagnosis with equivalent efficacy and efficiency of interferon-γ release assay (IGRA). This study showed that repeatability, intermediate precision, and accuracy of the Bionote-ELISA were comparable to QFT-ELISA. The Bionote-ELISA could provide the alternative method.

Retraction: Novel Approach to Activity Evaluation for Release-Active Forms of Anti-Interferon-Gamma Antibodies Based on Enzyme-Linked Immunoassay.

Serum Gamma-glutamyltransferase and Obesity: is there a Link?

Little data is available on gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and body fat distribution in healthy individuals. We examined whether GGT within normal range is prospectively associated with total body fat (TF) and regional body fat distribution.

Interferon gamma transcript detection on T cells based on magnetic actuation and multiplex double-tagging electrochemical genosensing.

Interferon-γ is a proinflammatory cytokine, and its production is related with effective host defense against intracellular pathogens. Therefore, the level of interferon-γ is considered a good biomarker for intracellular infections. It is also useful for the assessment, treatment progression and follow-up of non-communicable diseases, including cancer and autoimmune disorders, among others. This work addresses the development of a novel interferon-γ release assay (IGRA) to evaluate the expression of inte...

Alterations in interhemispheric gamma-band connectivity are related to the emergence of auditory verbal hallucinations in healthy subjects during NMDA-receptor blockade.

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a common positive symptom of schizophrenia. Excitatory-to-inhibitory (E/I) imbalance related to disturbed N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) functioning has been suggested as a possible mechanism underlying altered connectivity and AVH in schizophrenia. The current study examined the effects of ketamine, a NMDAR antagonist, on glutamate-related mechanisms underlying interhemispheric gamma-band connectivity, conscious auditory perception during dichotic listening (...

Do higher cut-off values for tuberculin skin test increase the specificity and diagnostic agreement with interferon gamma release assays in immunocompromised Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccinated patients?

Immunocompromised patients with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) are at high risk of progression to active tuberculosis. Detection and treatment of LTBI in this group of patients are very important to control active tuberculosis. Tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma release assays (IGRAs) are two methods for detection of LTBI. Diagnostic agreement between two tests are poor especially in Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccinated immunocompromised patients. In this study, we tried to figure o...

Defects of Gamma Oscillations in Auditory Steady-State Evoked Potential of Schizophrenia.

Patients with schizophrenia have many cognitive deficits. Gamma oscillations exist in the human brain and are closely related to neurocognition. Auditory Steady-State Responses (ASSRs) is an electroneurophysiological index that could reflect gamma oscillations. It was found that the energy evoked by 40 Hz ASSRs in schizophrenic patients was significantly lower than that in healthy subjects. However, the correlation between ASSRs phase index and clinical symptoms and neurocognitive deficits has yet to be sys...

Interferon-gamma Impairs Maintenance and Alters Hematopoietic Support of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal Cells.

Bone marrow (BM) mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) provide micro-environmental support to hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). Culture-expanded MSCs are interesting candidates for cellular therapies due to their immunosuppressive and regenerative potential which can be further enhanced by pre-treatment with interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). However, it remains unknown whether IFN-γ can also influence hematopoietic support by BM-MSCs. Here, we elucidate the impact of IFN-γ on the hematopoietic support ...

The use of a custom-made cylindrical graphite proportional counter (Cy-GPC) along with a cylindrical tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) for neutron-gamma mixed-field dosimetry has been studied in the following steps: first, the consistency of the gamma dose measurement between the Cy-TEPC and the Cy-GPC was investigated over a range of 20 keV (X-ray) to 0.661 MeV (Cs-137 gamma ray). Then, with both the counters used simultaneously, the neutron and gamma ray doses produced by a P385 Neutron Genera...

Evaluation of gamma contribution in a neutron calibration field of Am-Be241 source.

The paper presents the evaluation of gamma contribution in a neutron calibration field of a 241Am-Be source. The characterization of gamma flux spectra and gamma ambient dose equivalent rates has been performed using a portable NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometer. For obtaining the gamma ambient dose equivalent rates from the measured spectra, two approaches were applied based on the applications of the G(E) function and the ICRP 74 conversion factors, respectively. Comparison of the gamma ambient dose equivalent ra...

Expression of SOCS1 and SOCS3 Genes in Interferon-Treated and Direct-Acting Antiviral Drugs-Treated Hepatitis C Patients.

Genetics of host plays a significant role in susceptibility and pathogenesis of disease. During hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, HCV proteins interfere with interferon (IFN) signaling pathways and upregulate transcription of suppressor of cytokine signaling 1 and 3 genes (SOCS1 and SOCS3), which results in impaired immune response. In this study, we evaluated relative expression of SOCS1 and SOCS3 in untreated HCV patients and patients treated with 2 different treatment strategies that are, (IFN therapy a...

Understanding the Expanding Roles of Interferon and Cytokines in Health and Disease.

Gamma and gamma-coupled beams.

A new class of scalar, rotationally symmetric Gaussian-like beams is introduced. The slowly varying amplitudes of such beams are represented as analytical solutions to the paraxial wave equation, described in terms of the incomplete gamma functions and their products with quadratic exponential and power functions of different kinds. The specific functional forms of these solutions give rise to such names as gamma, gamma-Gaussian, gamma-parabolic, and gamma-anti-Gaussian beams. It is established that, within...
