Location is everything: The hemodynamic effects of REBOA in Zone 1 versus Zone 3 of the aorta.

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is an emerging technology to augment proximal blood pressure during the resuscitation of patients with noncompressible torso hemorrhage. Currently, placement choice, supraceliac (Zone 1) versus infrarenal (Zone 3) aorta, depends on injury patterns, but remains a highly debated topic. We sought to compare the proximal hemodynamic support provided by Zone 1 versus Zone 3 REBOA placement and the degree of hemodynamic instability upon reperfusion...

Does the Bursa Pre-Macularis protect the fovea from shear stress? A possible mechanical role.

Purpose of present study is to evaluate whether the Pre-Macular Bursa (PMB) modifies Wall Shear Stress (WSS) at the retinal surface during saccadic movements. We created a mathematical model consisting of 25,000 grid cells and simulated a horizontal saccade spanning 50° in 0.17s, both in absence and in presence of the PMB. Wall Shear Stress SS was computed throughout the retinal surface and the posterior pole was divided into 3 Zones comprising 400 nodes each: Zone 1 (radius 3.5 mm; 0°-17°) correspondi...

The analysis of the nitrogen conversion characteristics in two regions showed tha...

Accessing the anterior mesencephalic zone: Orbitozygomatic versus Subtemporal Approach Surgical approaches for the anterior mesencephalic zone.

Despite the latest development of microsurgery, electrophysiological monitoring and neuroimaging, the surgical management of intrinsic brainstem lesions remains a challenge. Several safe entry points have been described to access the different surfaces of the brainstem. The knowledge of this entry zones anatomy is critical to perform a safe and less morbid approach. To access the anterior midbrain surface a well-known entry point is the anterior mesencephalic (AM) zone. Our aim was to quantify the surgical ...

Is capillary zone electrophoresis a suitable method for estimating serum albumin: A comparison of four methods.

The capillary zone electrophoresis method of albumin measurement is frequently used for oncologic and haematologic patients but few data exist about the agreement between the albumin measurements performed by capillary zone electrophoresis and other methods. The aim of this study was to analyse the agreement between human serum albumin measurements by capillary zone electrophoresis and by the nephelometry, bromocresol purple and turbidimetry methods.

More are better, but the details matter: combinations of multiple Fresnel zone plates for improved resolution and efficiency in X-ray microscopy.

Fresnel zone plates used for X-ray nanofocusing face high-aspect-ratio nanofabrication challenges in combining narrow transverse features (for high spatial resolution) along with extended optical modulation along the X-ray beam direction (to improve efficiency). The stacking of multiple Fresnel zone plates along the beam direction has already been shown to offer improved characteristics of resolution and efficiency when compared with thin single zone plates. Using multislice wave propagation simulation meth...

Outcomes of Planned 2-Stage Hybrid Aortic Repair with Dacron Replaced Proximal Landing Zone.

Results of hybrid arch repair (HAR) utilizing native zone 0 proximal landing zone (PLZ) have been unsatisfactory in many series, especially in the setting of ascending aortic dilation (>4.0 cm). This study reports early and late outcomes of planned 2-stage HAR with open 1st stage proximal aortic replacement (PAR) followed by 2nd stage thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) with PLZ within the Dacron replaced zone 0.

Assessment of Water Resources Sustainability in Mainland China in Terms of Water Intensity and Efficiency.

Investigation into water resources sustainability (WRS) is vital for a regional sustainable development strategy. This paper aimed to quantitatively evaluate the WRS in mainland China using a three-layer indicator system. Three important factors significantly affecting WRS are: water resources quantity (WRQ), water intensity (WI) and water efficiency (WE). Assessment of the three indicators was carried out in 356 cities where each indicator was graded from "very low" to "very high" according to the value ma...

Levels, characteristics and health risk assessment of VOCs in different functional zones of Hefei.

In order to study the characteristics and health risk of VOCs in the ambient air in the typical developing cities in China, the research was conducted in five functional zones in Hefei from September 2016 to January 2017. The average concentrations of total measured VOCs in traffic zone was the largest (85.94 μg m), followed by industrial zone (64.84 μg m), development zone (58.92 μg m), resident zone (57.31 μg m), and background zone (54.94 μg m). Cl-VOCs were most abundant species...

Prox1 mRNA expression in the medial cortex of the turtle (Pseudemys scripta elegans).

The medial cortex of the cerebrum in reptiles is thought to be homologous to the mammalian dentate gyrus, based on cytoarchitectures, fiber connections, and neurochemical profiles. To support this hypothesis, we examined the mRNA expression of vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (vGluT1), a glutamatergic gene marker, and Prox1, a selective gene marker for granule cells of the dentate gyrus, in the turtle medial cortex (zone 2). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction revealed the presence of both mRNA...

Characteristics of organic nitrogen fractions in sediments of the water level fluctuation zone in the tributary of the Yangtze River.

The contents of different organic nitrogen (N) fractions, their contributions to total N (TN) and the relationship between their mineralizable N (MN) and different organic N fractions in sediments of the water level fluctuation (WLF) zone were investigated. The contents of TN, acid hydrolyzable N (AHN), and nonhydrolyzable N (NHN) decreased in sediments from the lower altitudes of the WLF zone. The AHN and NHN accounted for 70.56 to 82.89% and 17.11 to 29.44% of TN, respectively. The AHN was the main organi...

Transient analytical solution for one-dimensional transport of organic contaminants through GM/GCL/SL composite liner.

Analytical solution for transport of organic contaminants through composite liner consisting of a geomembrane (GM), a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), and a soil liner (SL) with finite thickness is presented. The transient diffusion-advection processes in the whole composite liner and adsorption in GCL and SL can be described by the present method. The method is successfully verified against analytical solution to a coupling transient diffusion-advection problem in double-layer porous media. The rationality o...

Interictal stereotactic-EEG functional connectivity in refractory focal epilepsies.

Drug-refractory focal epilepsies are network diseases associated with functional connectivity alterations both during ictal and interictal periods. A large majority of studies on the interictal/resting state have focused on functional MRI-based functional connectivity. Few studies have used electrophysiology, despite its high temporal capacities. In particular, stereotactic-EEG is highly suitable to study functional connectivity because it permits direct intracranial electrophysiological recordings with rel...

A mechanism of T cell dependent selection of antigen engaged Germinal Center B cells.

A model of B cell affinity selection is proposed, and an explanation of peripheral tolerance mechanisms through antibody repertoire editing is presented. We show that affinity discrimination between B cells is driven by a competition between obtaining T cell help and removal of B cells from the light zone, either through apoptosis or by a return to the dark zone of germinal centers. We demonstrate that this mechanism also allows for the negative selection of self reactive B cells and maintenance of B cell t...

This study compares foveal avascular zone (FAZ) geometry in healthy eyes as imaged by two commercially available optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) devices. Foveal avascular zone measurements are repeatable and reproducible with each OCTA device, but interdevice agreement was poor. We provide conversion factors between devices.

Key features of the nephrogenic zone in the fetal human kidney-hardly known but relevant for the detection of first traces impairing nephrogenesis.

In healthy newborn babies, nephrogenesis proceeds unnoticed until birth. With start of the perinatal period, morphogenetic activity in the renal outer cortex consisting of an inner maturation zone and an outer nephrogenic zone is downregulated by unknown signals. One of the results is that the entire nephrogenic zone as well as the contained progenitor cells and niches disintegrate. In contrast, a too early inactivation of the nephrogenic zone takes place in the kidneys of preterm and low birth weight babie...
