RATIONALE: Radioactive iodine may be effective in reducing the rate of recurrence of liver cancer after surgery to remove the tumor. It is not yet known if radioactive iodine is more effective than no further treatment after surgery.
PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of radioactive iodine in treating patients who have undergone surgery for liver cancer.
- Compare the effect of adjuvant hepatic intra-arterial iodine I 131 lipiodol vs observation in terms of rate of recurrence and overall survival of patients with curatively resected hepatocellular carcinoma.
OUTLINE: This is a randomized, multicenter study. Patients are stratified according to participating center. Patients are randomized to 1 of 2 treatment arms.
- Arm I: Within 4-6 weeks after prior resection, patients receive adjuvant hepatic intra-arterial iodine I 131 lipiodol once.
- Arm II: After prior resection, patients undergo observation. Patients are followed monthly for 1 year and then every 3 months thereafter.
PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A minimum of 300 patients (150 per treatment arm) will be accrued for this study.
Allocation: Randomized, Control: Active Control, Primary Purpose: Treatment

RATIONALE: Iodine I 131 ethiodized oil may help prevent or delay the recurrence of cancer. It is not yet known whether iodine I 131 ethiodized oil is more effective than non-radiolabeled e...
Pre-gestational performance of hysterosalpingography (HSG) using an oil-soluble iodinated contrast medium has been demonstrated to be the main cause of excessive iodine exposure for pregna...
RATIONALE: Radioactive iodine uses radiation to kill tumor cells. Giving iodine I 131 with or without thyroid-stimulating hormone after surgery may kill any tumor cells that remain after s...
This study evaluates the difference of imaging diagnostic quality and fertility promoting effect in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility by hysterosalpingography between using ethiod...
The purpose of this study is to find out if the drug AZD6244 can improve the radioactive iodine uptake by the patient's metastatic thyroid cancer. The investigator will also be testing the...
Hormone receptor positive breast cancer is characterized by a prolonged risk of recurrence. Extended adjuvant endocrine therapy improves disease-free survival (DFS), but no effect on overall survival ...
The management of N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) found at operation is controversial. Current guidelines recommend adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) or adjuvant chemo-radiation therapy (CRT). We evalu...
Platinum-based combination chemotherapy is the standard postoperative adjuvant treatment for pathological stage II/III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Oral S-1 therapy has good efficacy and relati...
The Cancer and Leukemia Group B 9,343 demonstrated that postoperative radiation can be safely omitted in women ≥70 years who underwent breast-conserving therapy for clinical stage I (T1N0M0) estroge...
Adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy improve survival in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma receiving surgery: adjuvant chemotherapy alone is insufficient in the era of intensity modulation radiation therapy.
In the era of intensity modulation radiation therapy (IMRT), no prospective randomized trial has evaluated the efficacy of adjuvant therapies such as adjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), adju...
Drug therapy given to augment or stimulate some other form of treatment such as surgery or radiation therapy. Adjuvant chemotherapy is commonly used in the therapy of cancer and can be administered before or after the primary treatment.
Ethyl ester of iodinated fatty acid of poppyseed oil. It contains 37% organically bound iodine and has been used as a diagnostic aid (radiopaque medium) and as an antineoplastic agent when part of the iodine is 131-I. (From Merck Index, 11th ed)

Combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy given to augment some other form of treatment such as surgery. It is commonly used in the therapy of cancer.
Preliminary cancer therapy (chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone/endocrine therapy, immunotherapy, hyperthermia, etc.) that precedes a necessary second modality of treatment.
