A Study to Compare the Effectiveness of Two Anti-HIV Drug Combinations

2014-08-27 03:59:09 | BioPortfolio

Summary

The purpose of this study is to compare two different anti-HIV drug combinations, one that contains nelfinavir (NFV) and one that does not. The best dosing schedule for indinavir (IDV) also will be studied.

Description

Patients are stratified by screening plasma viral RNA results (50,000 copies/ml or below vs above 50,000 copies/ml) and randomized to 1 of 2 treatment arms. Group 1 receives IDV 3 times daily plus d4T/3TC twice daily. Group 2 receives IDV/NFV/d4T/3TC twice daily. Patients remain on study medications for 24 weeks and are seen at the clinic once every 4 weeks after entering the study. At each clinic visit, blood samples are taken to evaluate CD4 cell count and plasma HIV RNA levels.

A Study to Compare the Safety and Effectiveness of Two Dosing Schedules of Lamivudine in Combination With Two Other Anti-HIV Drugs

The purpose of this study is to compare the safety and effectiveness of 2 dosing schedules (once daily vs twice daily) of lamivudine (3TC) given with stavudine (d4T) and either indinavir (...

A Study of Indinavir Sulfate Plus Zidovudine (AZT) Plus Lamivudine in HIV-Infected Patients Who Have Taken AZT for Six or More Months

To determine the clinical efficacy of indinavir sulfate or placebo in combination with zidovudine ( AZT ) and lamivudine ( 3TC ) in AIDS patients. Protease inhibitors such as indinavir su...

A Study to Evaluate Various Combinations of Anti-HIV Medications to Treat Early HIV Infection

The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness of various combinations of anti-HIV drugs in HIV-positive men and women. Patients receive specific combinations of 3 or 4 of the ...

Safety and Effectiveness of Giving Indinavir Plus Stavudine Plus Lamivudine to HIV-Infected Children

The purpose of this study is to see if it is safe and effective to give an anti-HIV drug combination of indinavir (IDV) plus stavudine (d4T) plus lamivudine (3TC) to HIV-infected children....

Effectiveness of Anti-HIV Drugs in Patients Who Have Not Received Previous Anti-HIV Drugs During Different Stages of HIV Infection

The purpose of this study is to compare changes in HIV levels and certain immune cells among patients at different stages of HIV infection. This study will also see how a combination of st...

Solid-state insight into the action of a pharmaceutical solvate: structural, thermal and dissolution analysis of indinavir sulfate ethanolate.

The crystal structure of indinavir sulfate, a pharmaceutical administered as an ethanol solvate, is presented, revealing a unique channel/ionic solvate structure to be characteristic of the compound. ...

Targeting P-Glycoprotein: Nelfinavir Reverses Adriamycin Resistance in K562/ADR Cells.

The emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR) caused by P-glycoprotein (P-gp) overexpression is a serious obstacle to the treatment of chronic myelocytic leukemia. In recent years, some clinical trials ...

Comparison of replication competence of wild-type and lamivudine-resistant hepatitis B virus isolates from a chronic hepatitis B patient.

In lamivudine-refractory chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients, discontinuation of lamivudine therapy may lead to loss of lamivudine-resistant hepatitis B virus (HBV) and reappearance of wide-type HBV as...

Efficacy and safety of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate versus low-dose stavudine over 96 weeks: a multi-country randomised, non-inferiority trial.

Reducing doses of antiretroviral drugs, including stavudine (d4T), may lower toxicity, while preserving efficacy. There are substantial concerns about renal and bone toxicities of tenofovir disoproxil...

Pharmacogenetic variation influences sensory neuropathy occurrence in Southern Africans treated with stavudine-containing antiretroviral therapy.

The use of the HIV antiretroviral drug stavudine (d4T), a thymidine analogue, is associated with the development of mitochondrial toxicities such as sensory neuropathy (SN). Genetic variation in genes...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Derivatives of chondroitin which have a sulfate moiety esterified to the galactosamine moiety of chondroitin. Chondroitin sulfate A, or chondroitin 4-sulfate, and chondroitin sulfate C, or chondroitin 6-sulfate, have the sulfate esterified in the 4- and 6-positions, respectively. Chondroitin sulfate B (beta heparin; DERMATAN SULFATE) is a misnomer and this compound is not a true chondroitin sulfate.

An enzyme that catalyzes the activation of sulfate ions by ATP to form adenosine-5'-phosphosulfate and pyrophosphate. This reaction constitutes the first enzymatic step in sulfate utilization following the uptake of sulfate. EC 2.7.7.4.

An arylsulfatase that catalyzes the hydrolysis of the 4-sulfate groups of the N-acetyl-D-galactosamine 4-sulfate units of chondroitin sulfate and dermatan sulfate. A deficiency of this enzyme is responsible for the inherited lysosomal disease, Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDOSIS VI). EC 3.1.6.12.

An enzyme that specifically cleaves the ester sulfate of iduronic acid. Its deficiency has been demonstrated in Hunter's syndrome, which is characterized by an excess of dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate. EC 3.1.6.13.

A dideoxynucleoside analog that inhibits reverse transcriptase and has in vitro activity against HIV.
