Metabolic Manipulation in Chronic Heart Failure

Conventional measures used for the treatment of chronic heart failure act predominantly by reducing the work performed by the heart. In a recent study, the investigators showed that one d...

Curing Atrial Fibrillation in Heart Failure

Heart failure is a condition that occurs when the heart muscle weakens and no longer contracts normally. Half of these patients have an irregularity of heart rhythm called atrial fibrilla...

Bowditch Revisited: Defining the Optimum Heart Rate Range in Chronic Heart Failure

The investigators are examining the relationship between heart rate and heart contraction in patients with heart failure and pacemakers, aiming to improve quality of life.

Chronic Heart Failure Analysis and Registry in the Tohoku District 2 (CHART-2 Study)

Chronic Heart Failure Analysis and Registry in the Tohoku District 2 (CHART-2 Study) is a large, prospective, hospital-based cohort study to investigate the following: - Characteristic...

Harefield Recovery Protocol Study for Patients With Refractory Chronic Heart Failure

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether patients with chronic heart failure not due to coronary artery disease who require use of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) for refra...

Loop diuretics in chronic heart failure: how to manage congestion?

Loop diuretics remain the cornerstone of congestion management in contemporary chronic heart failure care. However, their use is not supported by high quality data, and there is doubt about the safety...

Chronic heart failure nursing: integrated multidisciplinary care.

Heart failure is a condition that is increasing in prevalence in the UK, with high patient mortality rates and frequent hospital admissions. Nurse-led heart failure services help to improve patient ou...

The use of a novel non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist finerenone for the treatment of chronic heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist finerenone (BAY 94-8862) has been used to treat chronic heart failure (CHF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, conflicting results...

Effects of Dietary Inorganic Nitrate Supplementation on Exercise Performance in Patients With Heart Failure: Protocol for a Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Cross-Over Trial.

Chronic heart failure is characterized by an inability of the heart to pump enough blood to meet the demands of the body, resulting in the hallmark symptom of exercise intolerance. Chronic underperfus...

Chronic Right Ventricular Pacing in the Heart Failure Population.

We review the trials that have demonstrated potentially harmful effects from right ventricular (RV) apical pacing as well as reviewing the evidence of alternative RV pacing sites and cardiac resynchro...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION.

Enlargement of the HEART, usually indicated by a cardiothoracic ratio above 0.50. Heart enlargement may involve the right, the left, or both HEART VENTRICLES or HEART ATRIA. Cardiomegaly is a nonspecific symptom seen in patients with chronic systolic heart failure (HEART FAILURE) or several forms of CARDIOMYOPATHIES.

A severe irreversible decline in the ability of kidneys to remove wastes, concentrate URINE, and maintain ELECTROLYTE BALANCE; BLOOD PRESSURE; and CALCIUM metabolism. Renal failure, either acute (KIDNEY FAILURE, ACUTE) or chronic (KIDNEY FAILURE, CHRONIC), requires HEMODIALYSIS.

Disease of CARDIAC MUSCLE resulting from chronic excessive alcohol consumption. Myocardial damage can be caused by: (1) a toxic effect of alcohol; (2) malnutrition in alcoholics such as THIAMINE DEFICIENCY; or (3) toxic effect of additives in alcoholic beverages such as COBALT. This disease is usually manifested by DYSPNEA and palpitations with CARDIOMEGALY and congestive heart failure (HEART FAILURE).

Heart failure caused by abnormal myocardial relaxation during DIASTOLE leading to defective cardiac filling.
