Safety and Tolerability Study of Levetiracetam to Treat Patients With Status Epilepticus

The purpose of this study is to determine whether levetiracetam is safe and well tolerated by patients while suffering a status epilepticus. Levetiracetam is added to the standard treatmen...

Comparing The Effect On Cognition Of Adjunctive Therapy With Zonisamide Versus Sodium Valproate

Zonisamide (Zonegran) and sodium valproate (Epilim) are both medicines approved to treat epilepsy. The purpose of this study is to find out the extent to which zonisamide may affect memor...

Study of Antiepileptic Drug in Generalised Convulsive Status Epileptics

Compare the efficiency of the association, first line, the intravenous levetiracetam and the intravenous clonazepam, in that of a monotherapy of clonazepam intravenous in the pre-hospital ...

Ketamine in Refractory Convulsive Status Epilepticus

To evaluate the efficacy of intravenous administration of ketamine in the treatment of refractory convulsive status epilepticus in children compared to administration of midazolam at high ...

Intravenous Ganaxolone as Adjunctive Therapy to Treat Subjects With Status Epilepticus

This study will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an investigational drug, IV ganaxolone, as adjunctive therapy to standard of care to treat subjects with status epilepticus.

Levetiracetam circulating concentrations and response in status epilepticus.

Intravenous levetiracetam (LEV) is broadly used in the treatment of status epilepticus (SE). A loading dose is usually infused, aiming to reach quickly the range of plasma concentrations considered as...

Efficacy of levetiracetam for reducing rolandic discharges in comparison with carbamazepine and valproate sodium in rolandic epilepsy.

The main purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of levetiracetam (LEV) with the older antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) for preventing atypical evolution in children with Rolandic epilepsy (RE). A...

Comparison of etomidate and sodium thiopental for induction during rapid sequence intubation in convulsive status epilepticus: A retrospective single-center study.

Few outcome data are available about morbidity associated with endotracheal intubation modalities in critically ill patients with convulsive status epilepticus. We compared etomidate versus sodium thi...

Efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of intravenous midazolam in Japanese children with status epilepticus.

No dosing regimen has been established for the initial treatment of pediatric status epilepticus with intravenous midazolam. We therefore evaluated the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of bolus ...

Clinical utility of EMSE and STESS in predicting hospital mortality for status epilepticus.

To explore the applicability of the epidemiology-based mortality score in status epilepticus (EMSE) and the status epilepticus severity score (STESS) in predicting hospital mortality in patients with ...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A prolonged seizure or seizures repeated frequently enough to prevent recovery between episodes occurring over a period of 20-30 minutes. The most common subtype is generalized tonic-clonic status epilepticus, a potentially fatal condition associated with neuronal injury and respiratory and metabolic dysfunction. Nonconvulsive forms include petit mal status and complex partial status, which may manifest as behavioral disturbances. Simple partial status epilepticus consists of persistent motor, sensory, or autonomic seizures that do not impair cognition (see also EPILEPSIA PARTIALIS CONTINUA). Subclinical status epilepticus generally refers to seizures occurring in an unresponsive or comatose individual in the absence of overt signs of seizure activity. (From N Engl J Med 1998 Apr 2;338(14):970-6; Neurologia 1997 Dec;12 Suppl 6:25-30)

Intravenous injections of sodium amytal or sodium pentothal to induce a state in which the patient is more relaxed and communicative. Narcosuggestion, narcosynthesis, and narcoanalysis are therapeutic processes using these drug adjuncts.

A hypnotic and sedative with anticonvulsant effects. However, because of the hazards associated with its administration, its tendency to react with plastic, and the risks associated with its deterioration, it has largely been superseded by other agents. It is still occasionally used to control status epilepticus resistant to conventional treatment. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p608-9)

A condition where seizures occur in association with ethanol abuse (ALCOHOLISM) without other identifiable causes. Seizures usually occur within the first 6-48 hours after the cessation of alcohol intake, but may occur during periods of alcohol intoxication. Single generalized tonic-clonic motor seizures are the most common subtype, however, STATUS EPILEPTICUS may occur. (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, p1174)

Hemorrhagic necrosis that was first demonstrated in rabbits with a two-step reaction, an initial local (intradermal) or general (intravenous) injection of a priming endotoxin (ENDOTOXINS) followed by a second intravenous endotoxin injection (provoking agent) 24 h later. The acute inflammation damages the small blood vessels. The following intravascular coagulation leads to capillary and venous THROMBOSIS and NECROSIS. Shwartzman phenomenon can also occur in other species with a single injection of a provoking agent, and during infections or pregnancy. Its susceptibility depends on the status of IMMUNE SYSTEM, coagulation, FIBRINOLYSIS, and blood flow.
