Folic Acid and Creatine as Therapeutic Approaches for Lowering Blood Arsenic

The purpose of this study is to determine whether folic acid, alone or together with creatine supplementation, can lower blood arsenic concentrations and improve the ability to detoxify ar...

Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 in Young Indian Children

Hypothesis: Supplementation of two recommended daily allowances (RDA) of folic acid with or without simultaneous administration of vitamin B12 reduces the rates of acute lower respiratory ...

Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid Supplementation for Preventing Fractures in Elderly People

It is hypothesized that vitamin B12 and folic acid supplementation reduces the number of incident fractures. The proposed study, a randomized placebo-controlled intervention trial, compare...

Multi-micronutrient Supplementation During Peri-conception and Congenital Heart Disease

The purpose of this study is to determine whether daily oral supplements of vitamin B complex along with folic acid or supplements of iron plus folic acid given to women during peri-concep...

Potential Intervention Strategy With Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 in Patients With Schizophrenia

The investigators study aims are: 1. To investigate folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine levels in patients with schizophrenia. 2. To evaluate the relationships among fol...

Folic acid supplementation enhances arsenic methylation: results from a folic acid and creatine supplementation randomized controlled trial in Bangladesh.

Arsenic exposure through drinking water persists in many regions. Inorganic As (InAs) is methylated to monomethyl-arsenical species (MMAs) and dimethyl-arsenical species (DMAs), facilitating urinary e...

Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 Administration in CKD, Why Not?

Patients affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) experience a huge cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events represent the leading causes of death. Since traditi...

The role of Vitamin E - Selenium - Folic acid supplementation in improving the sperm parameters after varicocelectomy: a randomized clinical trial.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of antioxidants including Vitamin E-Selenium-Folic acid (Vit E -Se- FA) on semen parameters following varicocelectomy (VCT).

Assessment of the sufficiency of Moscow population with folic acid, depending on the combined effect of polymorphism of and genes.

The results of assessing the sufficiency of folic acid of the residents of the Moscow region have been presented depending on rs1801133 MTHFR gene polymorphism and rs9939609 FTO gene polymorphism. A t...

Nation-wide failure of voluntary folic acid fortification of corn masa flour and tortillas with folic acid.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required all enriched cereal grains to be fortified with folic acid in 1998. In April 2016, the FDA published regulations allowing voluntary fortif...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of FOLIC ACID in the diet. Many plant and animal tissues contain folic acid, abundant in green leafy vegetables, yeast, liver, and mushrooms but destroyed by long-term cooking. Alcohol interferes with its intermediate metabolism and absorption. Folic acid deficiency may develop in long-term anticonvulsant therapy or with use of oral contraceptives. This deficiency causes anemia, macrocytic anemia, and megaloblastic anemia. It is indistinguishable from vitamin B 12 deficiency in peripheral blood and bone marrow findings, but the neurologic lesions seen in B 12 deficiency do not occur. (Merck Manual, 16th ed)

A member of the vitamin B family that stimulates the hematopoietic system. It is present in the liver and kidney and is found in mushrooms, spinach, yeast, green leaves, and grasses (POACEAE). Folic acid is used in the treatment and prevention of folate deficiencies and megaloblastic anemia.

The active metabolite of FOLIC ACID. Leucovorin is used principally as its calcium salt as an antidote to folic acid antagonists which block the conversion of folic acid to folinic acid.

Cell surface receptors that bind to and transport FOLIC ACID, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, and a variety of folic acid derivatives. The receptors are essential for normal NEURAL TUBE development and transport folic acid via receptor-mediated endocytosis.

Disorders associated with acute or chronic exposure to compounds containing ARSENIC (ARSENICALS) which may be fatal. Acute oral ingestion is associated with gastrointestinal symptoms and an encephalopathy which may manifest as SEIZURES, mental status changes, and COMA. Chronic exposure is associated with mucosal irritation, desquamating rash, myalgias, peripheral neuropathy, and white transverse (Mees) lines in the fingernails.
