A Study to Compare Human Thrombin Against Bovine Thrombin in Its Ability to Stop Bleeding After Surgery

The purpose of this study is to see if Human Thrombin is as effective as Bovine Thrombin in stopping surgical bleeding within 10 minutes of application.

Study of Recombinant Human Thrombin for Bleeding During Surgery

The purpose of this study is to determine whether recombinant human Thrombin (rhThrombin) is effective in stopping bleeding during surgery, in comparison with bovine thrombin.

Safety and Efficacy of Topical Thrombin (Human) Grifols as an Adjunct to Hemostasis During Open Surgeries

This purpose of this clinical trial is to study the safety and efficacy of Topical Thrombin (Human) Grifols as an add-on treatment to help stop bleeding during vascular, parenchymous tissu...

Safety and Tolerability Study of E-WE Thrombin in Healthy Adult Subjects

The purpose of this study is to assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacodynamics of a single iv dose of E-WE Thrombin in healthy adult subjects.

Thrombin Generation and Thromboelastography in Non-Overt DIC

Sepsis is the 13th most common cause of death in the United States, causing approximately 210,000 deaths per year. Once DIC has developed, irreversible organ injury has already occurred a...

The anticoagulant effect of dabigatran is reflected in the lag time and time-to-peak, but not in the endogenous thrombin potential or peak, of thrombin generation.

Calibrated automated thrombinography (CAT) is a sensitive method to assess coagulation. Dabigatran inhibits both free thrombin and the αmacroglobulin (αM)-thrombin complex, which results in an erron...

Role of thrombin in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is an arterial disease associated with inflammation. Thrombin is a procoagulant and proinflammatory serine protease that contributes to the pathology of atherosclerosis by enhancing th...

Attenuation of murine acute lung injury by PF-573,228, an inhibitor of focal adhesion kinase.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is characterized by endothelial barrier disruption resulting in increased vascular permeability. As focal adhesion kinase (FAK), a non-receptor protein tyrosine kinase, is invo...

Thrombin modifies growth, proliferation and apoptosis of human colon organoids: a PAR1- and PAR4-dependent mechanism.

Thrombin is massively released upon tissue damage associated with bleeding or chronic inflammation. The question of the effects of such thrombin on tissue regrowth and repair has been scarcely address...

Electrochemiluminescent aptasensor for thrombin using nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots.

An electrochemiluminescent (ECL) aptamer based method is described for the determination of thrombin. Three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (3D-NGO) was placed on a glassy carbon electrode (...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Clotting time of PLASMA mixed with a THROMBIN solution. It is a measure of the conversion of FIBRINOGEN to FIBRIN, which is prolonged by AFIBRINOGENEMIA, abnormal fibrinogen, or the presence of inhibitory substances, e.g., fibrin-fibrinogen degradation products, or HEPARIN. BATROXOBIN, a thrombin-like enzyme unaffected by the presence of heparin, may be used in place of thrombin.

A family of proteinase-activated receptors that are specific for THROMBIN. They are found primarily on PLATELETS and on ENDOTHELIAL CELLS. Activation of thrombin receptors occurs through the proteolytic action of THROMBIN, which cleaves the N-terminal peptide from the receptor to reveal a new N-terminal peptide that is a cryptic ligand for the receptor. The receptors signal through HETEROTRIMERIC GTP-BINDING PROTEINS. Small synthetic peptides that contain the unmasked N-terminal peptide sequence can also activate the receptor in the absence of proteolytic activity.

A vitamin-K dependent zymogen present in the blood, which, upon activation by thrombin and thrombomodulin exerts anticoagulant properties by inactivating factors Va and VIIIa at the rate-limiting steps of thrombin formation.

A plasma protein that is the inactive precursor of thrombin. It is converted to thrombin by a prothrombin activator complex consisting of factor Xa, factor V, phospholipid, and calcium ions. Deficiency of prothrombin leads to hypoprothrombinemia.

A dry artificial sterile sponge of fibrin prepared by clotting with thrombin a foam or solution of fibrinogen. It is used in conjunction with thrombin as a hemostatic in surgery at sites where bleeding cannot be controlled by more common methods. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p648)
