Efficacy of a New Delivery System for Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate

2014-07-23 21:08:41 | BioPortfolio

Summary

The proposed study will test efficacy of HMB in free acid gel to decrease muscle damage, improve muscle strength, and diminish the inflammatory response following an acute exercise stress. HMB in a free acid gel or in CaHMB capsule form will be administered as either a single dose before a bout of acute exercise or in multiple doses (one before and three daily doses for the 3 days following the acute exercise). We hypothesize that HMB in free acid gel will result in less muscle damage, diminished inflammatory response, and improved muscle strength recovery than either a placebo or CaHMB treatment following a bout of acute eccentric exercise. Our endpoints will include measurements of: (1) markers for muscle damage (CPK and LDH); (2) muscle strength and soreness; (3) indicators of inflammation (CRP, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ra and IL-18).

Effectiveness of Ursodeoxycholic Acid Use in the Prevention of Gallstone Formation After Sleeve Gastrectomy

This is a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial with a total of 100 patients who are free of gallstones at baseline. The study involves taking an oral drug (Ursodeoxycholic Acid...

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) for Treatment of Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is a naturally occuring omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid found in oily fish. EPA has anti-colorectal (bowel) cancer activity in experimental models. This tri...

Effects of Amino Acid Formulation on Healthy Men Undergoing Unilateral Knee Immobilization

This is a safety and tolerability study investigating the effect of an amino acid formulation in healthy volunteers during and after limb immobilization.

No evidence for an acute placebo effect on emotional processing in healthy volunteers.

Placebo-controlled trials are the gold standard measure of efficacy in the development of new treatments for depression. However, the large placebo effects associated with standard measures of subject...

Placebo analgesia persists during sleep: An experimental study.

Although placebo analgesia is a well-recognized phenomenon with important clinical implications, the possibility that placebo effects occur during sleep has received little attention. This experimenta...

Linoleate-enriched diet increases both linoleic acid esterified to omega hydroxy very long chain fatty acids and free ceramides of canine stratum corneum without effect on protein-bound ceramides and skin barrier function.

Few studies have investigated the influence of increased amounts of dietary linoleic acid on the epidermal lipid biochemistry and TEWL in healthy subject. The influence of dietary linoleic acid on can...

Tramadol Hydrochloride at Steady State Lacks Clinically Relevant QTc Interval Increases in Healthy Adults.

We evaluated the effects of therapeutic and supratherapeutic doses of tramadol hydrochloride on the corrected QT (QTc) interval in healthy adults (aged 18-55 years) in a randomized, phase I, double-b...

Electrocardiographic effects of hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha) in healthy volunteers: A randomized controlled trial.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the electrocardiographic effects of hawthorn in healthy adult volunteers. It was double-blind cross-over trial randomized 20 healthy adult volunteers to rec...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A pentacyclic triterpene that occurs widely in many PLANTS as the free acid or the aglycone for many SAPONINS. It is biosynthesized from lupane. It can rearrange to the isomer, ursolic acid, or be oxidized to taraxasterol and amyrin.

A ceramidase subtype that is active at acid pH. It plays an important role in sphingolipid degradation by catalyzing the lysosomal hydrolysis of ceramide to sphingosine and free fatty acid. Inherited deficiency of acid ceramidase activity results in FARBER LIPOGRANULOMATOSIS.

Healthy People Programs are a set of health objectives to be used by governments, communities, professional organizations, and others to help develop programs to improve health. It builds on initiatives pursued over the past two decades beginning with the 1979 Surgeon General's Report, Healthy People, Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives, and Healthy People 2010. These established national health objectives and served as the basis for the development of state and community plans. These are administered by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP). Similar programs are conducted by other national governments.

An antitubercular agent often administered in association with ISONIAZID. The sodium salt of the drug is better tolerated than the free acid.

Misunderstanding among individuals, frequently research subjects, of scientific methods such as randomization and placebo controls.
