Telbivudine is a potent inhibitor of HBV but, due to a low genetic barrier to resistance, a high incidence of resistance has been observed in patients with high baseline levels of replication and in those with detectable HBV DNA after 24 weeks of therapy (A1). Telbivudine might be used in patients with good predictors of response (HBV DNA <2 X 106 IU/ ml, i.e. approximately 107 copies/ ml, or 6.3 log 10 IU/ ml at baseline) with verification of HBV DNA suppression below detection in real time PCR assay at 24 weeks.(EASL Guidelines for HBV 2009) The therapy of Pegylated-interferon-alpha-2a is considered as the standard of care for patients with chronic hepatitis b viral infection. However, recent study by Buster et al showed that a sustained viral response (SVR less than 2000 iu.ml at 6 months after treatment)) is obtained in 8 % of patients with genotype D, 30% genotype A, and 20-25% genotypes B or C (47). Vitamin D is a potent immune-modulator; and has been shown to improve SVR in combination with peg interferone in patients with chronic HCV viral infection (48). The impact of vitamin D on virologic response rates of interferon-based treatment of CHB is unknown. The aim of this study therefore was to assess whether Vitamin D, added to the conventional peg therapy in CHB, or to nucleotide analogues could improve the treatment efficacy

The purpose of this study is to determine if 48 weeks of therapy with Peginterferon Lambda plus Ribavirin is effective and safe for a treatment of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) compared to the...
The primary objective of the study is to demonstrate that the efficacy of peginterferon alfa-2a 40KD combination therapy with ribavirin in interferon naïve patients with chronic hepatitis...
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of nitazoxanide-peginterferon alfa-2b combination therapy compared to peginterferon monotherapy in patients that are treatm...
The aim of this study is to prove the efficacy of peginterferon in HIV infected patients with liver disease caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) when the treatment to eradicate the virus fail...
The primary purpose of this study is to determine if peginterferon alpha-2a maintenance therapy (90 mcg/week) will lower portal pressure in patients with hepatitis C virus infections and a...
Peginterferon plus ribavirin (peg-IFN/RBV) is still the standard of care for treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in many countries. Given the high toxicity of this regimen, our study aimed to develop...
In the past few years, a growing body of clinical evidence has highlighted the risk of vitamin D deficiency in patients with chronic hepatitis C and that vitamin D levels are associated with the cours...
In 2013, combination therapy using peginterferon, ribavirin, and boceprevir or telaprevir was introduced to treat hepatitis C virus genotype 1 infection in Brazil. The effectiveness of this therapy in...
Novel direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) are now the standard of care for the management of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Branded DAAs are associated with high sustained virological response at 12 w...
The recent development of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) against hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection could lead to higher sustained virological response (SVR) rates, with shorter treatment durati...
A family of hepatotropic DNA viruses which contains double-stranded DNA genomes and causes hepatitis in humans and animals. There are two genera: AVIHEPADNAVIRUS and ORTHOHEPADNAVIRUS. Hepadnaviruses include HEPATITIS B VIRUS, duck hepatitis B virus (HEPATITIS B VIRUS, DUCK), heron hepatitis B virus, ground squirrel hepatitis virus, and woodchuck hepatitis B virus (HEPATITIS B VIRUS, WOODCHUCK).
A species in the genus HEPATOVIRUS containing one serotype and two strains: HUMAN HEPATITIS A VIRUS and Simian hepatitis A virus causing hepatitis in humans (HEPATITIS A) and primates, respectively.
INFLAMMATION of the LIVER in humans caused by HEPATITIS DELTA VIRUS, a defective RNA virus that can only infect HEPATITIS B patients. For its viral coating, hepatitis delta virus requires the HEPATITIS B SURFACE ANTIGENS produced by these patients. Hepatitis D can occur either concomitantly with (coinfection) or subsequent to (superinfection) hepatitis B infection. Similar to hepatitis B, it is primarily transmitted by parenteral exposure, such as transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products, but can also be transmitted via sexual or intimate personal contact.
A strain of HEPATITIS A VIRUS which causes hepatitis in humans. The virus replicates in hepatocytes and is presumed to reach the intestine via the bile duct. Transmission occurs by the fecal-oral route.
INFLAMMATION of the LIVER in humans caused by HEPATITIS C VIRUS, a single-stranded RNA virus. Its incubation period is 30-90 days. Hepatitis C is transmitted primarily by contaminated blood parenterally, and is often associated with transfusion and intravenous drug abuse. However, in a significant number of cases, the source of hepatitis C infection is unknown.
Bioinformatics is the application of computer software and hardware to the management of biological data to create useful information. Computers are used to gather, store, analyze and integrate biological and genetic information which can then be applied...
DNA sequencing is the process of determining the precise order of nucleotides within a DNA molecule. During DNA sequencing, the bases of a small fragment of DNA are sequentially identified from signals emitted as each fragment is re-synthesized from a ...
An assay is an analytic procedure for qualitatively assessing or quantitatively measuring the presence or amount or the functional activity of a target entity. This can be a drug or biochemical substance or a cell in an organism or organic sample. ...
