Sevoflurane as an Anesthetic During Dilation and Evacuation Procedures

2014-07-23 21:11:08 | BioPortfolio

Sevoflurane is an FDA-approved anesthetic drug commonly used for anesthesia during second trimester abortion procedures. It has a few advantages, including ease of use by the anesthesia provider. However, the literature suggests that when used in doses higher than those used at OHSU and Lovejoy, it is associated with an increase in the risk of bleeding. The investigators study aims to test whether the lower dose used at OHSU and Lovejoy during second trimester abortion procedures causes any difference in blood loss, when compared to similar abortion procedures for which this drug is not used.

EEG Studies of Sevoflurane-Induced General Anesthesia

The investigators are performing this research study to find out how and where the anesthetic drugs sevoflurane and ketamine act in the brain. Sevoflurane and ketamine are anesthetics (a d...

Anesthesia and Lymphocytes Apoptosis

Most researches revealed that volatile anesthetic sevoflurane has a more marked cardioprotective effect against ischemia compared with intravenous agent propofol. However, propofol has been...

Effect of Head Position on MACEI of Sevoflurane in Children With Obstructive Airway

Children scheduled for tonsillectomy surgery were recruited into the study. General anesthesia was induced with 8% sevoflurane inhaled with 8 l.min-1 of oxygen via mask, followed by adjust...

Comparison of Sevoflurane, Propofol, and Sevoflurane Plus Propofol for Maintenance of Anaesthesia

Postoperative pain may be affected by general anaesthetics. The effect of propofol and sevoflurane on postoperative pain in chinese female patients has not been demonstrated before. This s...

1-1-8 Wash-in for Sevoflurane Low Flow Anesthesia

The investigators propose a new wash-in technique for sevoflurane low flow anesthesia with fresh gas flow of O2:N2O or O2:air 1:1 L/min with sevoflurane 8%. The objective of this study is...

Role of autophagy in sevoflurane-induced neurotoxicity in neonatal rat hippocampal cells.

Sevoflurane has been extensively employed for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. The effect of sevoflurane-induced apoptosis in developmental neurotoxicity has been appreciated for some ...

Ameliorative effect of sevoflurane on endoplasmic reticulum stress mediates cardioprotection against ischemic/reperfusion injury.

We aimed to investigate whether the cardioprotection of sevoflurane against ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury is via inhibiting endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS). The rat in vivo model of myocardial I...

Nerve growth factor metabolic dysfunction contributes to sevoflurane-induced cholinergic degeneration and cognitive impairments.

General anesthesia with sevoflurane is associated with an increased incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction. Previous studies have shown that sevoflurane anesthesia can affect the integrity a...

Sevoflurane Protects Hepatocytes From Ischemic Injury by Reducing Reactive Oxygen Species Signaling of Hepatic Stellate Cells: Translational Findings Based on a Clinical Trial.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) data demonstrate that sevoflurane postconditioning improves clinical outcomes of liver resection with inflow occlusion, presumably due to hepatocyte protection from...

Neonatal exposure to sevoflurane caused cognitive deficits by dysregulating SK2 channels and GluA2-lacking AMPA receptors in juvenile rat hippocampus.

Anesthetics exposure to neonates leads to impairment of hippocampal synaptic plasticity and cognitive functions later in life. This phenomenon complies with the concept of metaplasticity: a priming st...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Abortion induced to save the life or health of a pregnant woman. (From Dorland, 28th ed)

Any type of abortion, induced or spontaneous, that is associated with infection of the UTERUS and its appendages. It is characterized by FEVER, uterine tenderness, and foul discharge.

A mammalian fetus expelled by INDUCED ABORTION or SPONTANEOUS ABORTION.

Results of conception and ensuing pregnancy, including LIVE BIRTH; STILLBIRTH; SPONTANEOUS ABORTION; INDUCED ABORTION. The outcome may follow natural or artificial insemination or any of the various ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUES, such as EMBRYO TRANSFER or FERTILIZATION IN VITRO.

Individuals requesting induced abortions.
