Comparing Prism Adaptation Therapy and Bromocriptine Medication for Spatial Neglect: Theoretical and Practical Outcomes

2014-08-27 03:18:53 | BioPortfolio

Summary

The purpose of this research study is to examine the effects of prism adaptation or bromocriptine treatment on two visual-spatial recovery components. After a stroke, an "internal GPS", locating where objects or people lie in a particular area of space, may be impaired. Alternately, a stroke may impair precise visual-spatial hand and body aiming movements. The research team wishes to discover whether using prism goggles, or taking a medication (bromocriptine) affects visual-spatial where or aiming errors selectively after stroke.

This research represents one of the first attempts to apply what we know about the brain from neuroscience research, to modern clinical rehabilitation practices.

Feasibility and Effectiveness Study of Implementing Prism Adaptation as a Treatment for Spatial Neglect After Stroke

Spatial neglect is a common attention disorder after right hemisphere stroke and is associated with decreased independence and quality of life. Despite its high prevalence in the stroke po...

Repositioning Dopamine D2 Receptor Agonist Bromocriptine to Enhance Docetaxel Chemotherapy and Treat Bone Metastatic Prostate Cancer.

Docetaxel resistance remains a major obstacle in the treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) bone metastasis. In this study, we demonstrate that the dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) agonist bromocriptine effect...

Inverse prism based on temporal discontinuity and spatial dispersion.

We introduce the concept of the inverse prism as the dual of the conventional prism and deduce from this duality an implementation of it based on temporal discontinuity and spatial dispersion provided...

Comparison of Symmetrical Prism Adaptation to Asymmetrical Prism Adaptation in those with Normal Binocular Vision.

This study sought to determine whether symmetrical compared to asymmetrical horizontal prisms (base-out or base-in) evoked different rates of phoria adaptation. Sixteen young adults with normal binocu...

Assessment of the Effectiveness of Combat Eyewear Protection Against Blast Overpressure.

It is unclear whether combat eyewear used by U. S. Service members is protective against blast overpressures (BOPs) caused by explosive devices. Here, we investigated the mechanisms by which BOP bypas...

Frontal lesions predict response to prism adaptation treatment in spatial neglect: A randomised controlled study.

Spatial neglect commonly follows right hemisphere stroke. It is defined as impaired contralesional stimulus detection, response, or action, causing functional disability. While prism adaptation treatm...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

The interference of one perceptual stimulus with another causing a decrease or lessening in perceptual effectiveness.

A dopamine agonist and serotonin antagonist. It has been used similarly to BROMOCRIPTINE as a dopamine agonist and also for MIGRAINE DISORDERS therapy.

Cognitive disorders characterized by an impaired ability to perceive the nature of objects or concepts through use of the sense organs. These include spatial neglect syndromes, where an individual does not attend to visual, auditory, or sensory stimuli presented from one side of the body.

A perceptual phenomenon used by Gestalt psychologists to demonstrate that events in one part of the perceptual field may affect perception in another part.

Disorders of hearing or auditory perception due to pathological processes of the AUDITORY PATHWAYS in the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM. These include CENTRAL HEARING LOSS and AUDITORY PERCEPTUAL DISORDERS.
