Surveillance Monitoring for ART Toxicities Study in HIV Uninfected Children Born to HIV Infected Women (SMARTT)

Summary

The information we have right now seems to show that for most babies these drugs seem safe and should be used to prevent infection. But no drug is 100% safe and some babies have developed problems. These problems were found in studies like WITS and PACTG 219C. Some babies think or grow more slowly. A few babies have had weak muscles and a few had heart problems. This study will continue to try to find out what these and other problems might be, how often they happen, and if there are ways we can prevent these problems for babies in the future.

Description

HIV-infected mothers can pass HIV to their babies before they are born. If nothing is done, one out of every four babies will be infected with HIV. The first study that we did over 15 years ago used one HIV drug to see if the HIV infection of the baby could be stopped. Using one drug lowered the number of babies infected to one in eight, so that 7 babies out of 8 were free of HIV. Since then, new HIV drugs have been developed and when these are used together, only 2-3 babies out every 100 born to an HIV-infected mother become infected. Now 97 babies out of 100 are free of HIV.

The information we have right now seems to show that for most babies these drugs seem safe and should be used to prevent infection. But no drug is 100% safe and some babies have developed problems.
