A double blind, placebo-controlled, dose ranging study in males over the age of 65, who have a history of nocturia. The study will investigate pharmacodynamic outcomes (urine volumes and osmolality, circulating coagulation factors and haemodynamics) and pharmacokinetics, of both single and multiple oral doses of VA106483 at three dose levels, under conditions of controlled hydration.
This is an add-on study to an existing multimodal neuroimaging study in MDD by investigating the acute effects of DLPFC tDCS on threat vigilance in 24-44 patients with MDD, as part of an open-label treatment intervention study. Behavioral and neural measures of threat vigilance will be taken acutely and investigated as predictors of subsequent treatment response to a four-week, fourteen-session DLPFC tDCS intervention, using a novel home-tDCS protocol. The design takes advantag...
The POWER Cohort study is a PrEP implementation project to demonstrate Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) delivery for young women in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa and Kisumu, Kenya.
This study evaluates effectiveness of mailed invitations for colorectal cancer screening among screen-eligible Ontarians who are due for screening. The study will evaluate the effectiveness of mailed invitations in general (compared to no invitation) but will also determine if new invitation letters (2 letters for male, 1 letter for females) are more effective than current invitation letters used by the ColonCancerCheck program.
In the present study, 144 children (72 males and 72 females), whose ages ranged between 8-13, were divided into 12 equal experimental groups according to their ages and gender. They were all considered to have poor hygiene. Only one out of the three different education methods (brochure, model or video) was applied to each group. The percentage change in PI, GI, BOP and theoretical test points from the baseline to the 6th months were evaluated.
The purpose of the study is to test feasibility and acceptability of a lottery to help women in Cape Town, South Africa to continue using long-acting reversible contraceptives to avoid unintended pregnancies, and to also use condoms to reduce sexually transmitted infections including HIV.
Males and females may exhibit different responses to testing of adrenal function. The hormones responsible for controlling adrenal function are ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone or corticotropin) and CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone). Adrenal function is tested with an ACTH stimulation test. ACTH stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Cortisol levels are measured, and a certain peak level indicates normal adrenal gland function. Females may produce more cort...
To examine whether multiple doses of oxytocin have different effects on behavior and neural indices in males with high or low trait anxiety.
The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy and process of change that occurs in Attention Training in comparison to an established treatment for social phobia, Cognitive Therapy. A randomized trial was conducted in which participants were allocated to either six weeks of Attention Training or Cognitive Therapy. It was hypothesized that both treatments would be effective in reducing social phobia symptoms, but that Attention Training would work primarily by reducing lev...
This two-site study is a test of Attention Bias Modification Treatment (ABMT) among 260 youths ages 10 to 14 years with social anxiety disorder. One-half of participants will receive 8 sessions of computer administered ABMT and the other half of participants will receive 8 sessions of computer administered Neutral Control Task (NCT). We hypothesize that a biomarker of attention to social threat measured using electroencephalography (EEG) and ratings of social anxiety severity w...
Air pollution is a global environmental and health concern, contributing to onset and deterioration of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. As climate change and dependence on diminishing fossil fuel supplies have taken center stage in political and scientific debates, renewable carbon-neutral fuels like biodiesel receive increasing attention. The most common biodiesel within the European Union, rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME) is perceived to be a "green fuel", as it is sus...
Extracts of sage and polyphenols have separately been reported to interact with central nervous system (CNS) mechanisms relevant to cognitive performance but, to date, no trial has combined these interventions. The current study investigates the effects of this combined intervention in N=90 healthy males and females between 30-60 yrs, at 600 mg versus placebo, on cognition and mood over a 29 day period.
This study will evaluate the safety, tolerability and efficacy of the oral administration of setipiprant tablets 1000 mg twice daily (BID) relative to placebo and active comparator, finasteride 1 mg once daily, in 18 to 41 years old males with androgenetic alopecia (AGA).
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of CXB722 on neuroendocrine stress response and subjective reports related to mood and stress during and after experimentally induced stress among healthy young males.
Human beings are characterized by their extraordinary ability to thermoregulate. During a physical exercise, only 25% of the energy provided by the substrates is converted into muscular mechanical work. The remaining 75% is released as heat. In fact, thermoregulation has always been an integral part of exercise's physiology. Due to current climate change, study and understand the mechanisms of thermoregulation and the practices of runners to cope with these constraints become...
The goal of this study is to determine the efficacy of the drug Droxidopa (Northera) in increasing blood pressure in subject with hypotension, low blood pressure, which is classified as blood pressure less than 110/70 in males and 100/70 in females. The first aim is to determine the proportion of subject with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) who have a normotensive response to Droxidopa. The second is to determine the proportion of subject with SCI who express a hypertensive response t...
This study will develop and test the efficacy of an online, family-based intervention (MySTYLE) tailored to the relevant sexual health needs of non-heterosexual adolescent males and their parents/caregivers compared to an online family-based intervention that addresses general health topics. Adolescent males and their parents will be recruited from community organizations, medical clinics and schools in Jackson, MS. Interviews with youth, parents, and relevant community leaders...
Fear and anxiety are normal responses to a threat. However, anxiety is considered abnormal when the response to the threat is excessive or inappropriate. This study will examine changes in the body and brain that occur during unpleasant learning experiences in healthy volunteers with high, moderate, and low levels of anxiety. A high degree of generalized anxiety is a component of many anxiety disorders and is regarded as a marker of vulnerability for these disorders. People wi...
Evaluate the safety and feasibility of the Medtronic Zotarolimus stent to improve erectile function in males with sub-optimal response to PDE5i therapy due to atherosclerotic lesions of the internal iliac and/or internal pudendal arteries.
The daily requirement of threonine, an essential amino acid, will be evaluated in healthy adult males and in adult males with Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis using the indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) method. Participants will consume specially formulated diets with varying levels of threonine.
Acute physiological consequences of ultra-marathon running are still unknown, particularly in women. Some studies have suggested that the proportion of fatigue attributable to peripheral and central mechanisms varies between males and females; however, results are contradictory. The results from the investigators of the present experiment in two studies conducted in 2009 and 2012 showed that: - A large part of fatigue induced by a mountain ultra-marathon could be attribute...
Eight weeks supplementation of alpha lipoic acid (known superantioxidant already produced by the body) will significantly improve metabolic syndrome markers (e.g., excess body weight, blood pressure, glucose, insulin, blood lipids, and self-report measures) in young (18-25 years) overweight or obese males compared to placebo (cellulose starch). If the hypothesis is supported, alpha lipoic acid ingestion could be beneficial in reducing disease risk and enhancing metabolic dysfun...
