Effect of Microbial Exposure on Health, Particularly Immune System

The effect of microbial exposure on healthy human subjects will be investigated. Changes in cytokine and IgE and vaccine response will be measured. The hypothesis is that microbial exposure increases the measured responses.

The Role of Hypoxia as a Selective Pressure for TP53 Mutations

The study aims to develop scans that tell the investigators about the oxygen content of tumours using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and seeing whether regions of low oxygen content are related to mutations in cancer genes such as TP53. MRI is a method of obtaining pictures of inside of the body that shows the appearance and structure of soft tissues. To get the information about the oxygen content of tumours, MRI is carried out while breathing 100% oxygen. The variation of ...

Long-Term IOP Fluctuation and VF Progression After Triple Procedure

Long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) fluctuation may be significantly associated with the progression of glaucomatous visual field loss, even in patients kept always low IOP after triple procedure, an effective approach for patients with coexisting glaucoma and visually significant cataracts.

A Study for Sufficient Acarbose Decreased Glucose Excursion in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

This is a multicentre observational study to investigate the improvement in glucose fluctuation of sufficient acarbose therapy on type 2 diabetes patient with high blood glucose fluctuation

Diagnosis of Septicaemia by Detection of Microbial DNA in Blood in Severe Infections

The primary purpose is to improve and quicken the microbial diagnosis in severe infections, since only one third of the cases are documented by blood cultures and adequate anti-infective therapy in the 48 hours reduced mortality and morbidity. Our hypothesis is that detection of microbial DNA in blood by real time PCR may increase the number of cases diagnosed for bacteraemia or fungemia and shorten the time to positive results, which will provide information for an adequate a...

The Impact of Pack Supply on Birth Control Pill Continuation

The purpose of this study is to determine whether getting more packs of birth control pills leads to improved continuation, when compared with getting the traditional supply.

A Molecular Toolkit for the Microbial Investigation of Severe Community Acquired Pneumonia

Severe community acquired pneumonia is common and associated with high mortality. Conventional microbiological diagnostics identify pathogens in approximately half of cases, which is inadequate for both clinical and epidemiological purposes. This study applies next-generation sequencing based metagenomic techniques to patients with extremely severe community acquired pneumonia, to investigate the microbiome of severe community acquired pneumonia and evaluate metagenomic approac...

Pediatric FEcal Microbial Transplantation for Ulcerative Colitis

The objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility of fecal microbial transplants for the therapy of pediatric ulcerative colitis. Specifically, the investigators will test the hypothesis that a protocol of twice-weekly retention enemas over six weeks, using fecal transplant material from an anonymous donor previously associated with significant therapeutic response, will improve the efficacy of fecal microbial transplant in pediatric ulcerative colitis patients.

Measurement of Activity Participation for Persons With Schizophrenia Living in the Community

The purpose of the study is to develop a questionnaire on community occupational participation for persons with schizophrenia living in the community. In the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) recently revised by World Health Organization, activity participation is recognized as an important indication of health-related status. From the perspective of occupational therapy, the researcher intends to investigate the experiences of occupation...

Comparation of Glycaemic Fluctuation and Oxidative Stress Between Two Short-term Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes

The purpose of this study is to compare the blood glucose control, glycaemic fluctuation and oxidative stress for Type 2 Diabetes between two therapies, one is glargine combined with oral drugs and the other is continuous subcutaneous insulin injection.

Amputee Residual Limb Volume Fluctuation

The goal of this project is a useful clinical instrument for diagnosis and treatment of residual limb volume fluctuation in individuals who use prosthetic limbs. The hypothesis to be tested is that the instrument effectively measures short and long term volume fluctuations in individuals with trans-tibial amputation. Pilot data are collected on amputee subjects during short test sessions using bioimpedance analysis as the measurement modality.

If we can establish a relationship between gastrointestinal microbial community composition and convalescent ischemic stroke outcomes in a U.S. sample, such results would prompt further mechanistic studies, and ultimately provide a rationale for trials to determine whether modulating intestinal immune responses (e.g. via prebiotic, probiotic, or fecal transfe...

P/FP Ratio - Redefining P/F Ratio in Diagnosing the Severity of Oxygenation in ARDS With PEEP

The PaO2/FiO2 (P/F) ratio is same for all the Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) ≥ to 5. This P/F ratio misleads the severity of disease without the knowledge of set PEEP. The Oxygenation status is actually worse when the patient is using high PEEP. P/F Ratio doesn't include PEEP in the calculation. The P/F ratio doesn't show the severity of the disease appropriate for the set PEEP. PaO2/(FiO2 X PEEP) P/FP Ratio is a new Formula which addresses this gap to appropriately...
