Efficacy of Zinc on Concurrent Chemo-radiotherapy Induced Taste Alterations

Taste changes are common in cancer patients receiving concurrent chemoradiation which become a significant complaint and a cause of distress and morbidity. Loss of gustatory function further advances to malnutrition, weight loss, reduced quality of life, poor compliance and even diminished response to drug therapy. Taste is an essential sensation which serves oral intake of food and enables to prevent the ingestion of potentially harmful and poisonous substances. The sense of t...

The Association of Cardiac Ion Channel Related Gene Polymorphism and Prolonged QTc Interval After Endotracheal Intubation

The QTc interval is affected by heart rate, medications and changes in the autonomic nervous system. The endotracheal laryngoscopy, the necessary step during general anesthesia, prolongs QTc interval. Changes in the flow of ion currents could result from the genetic variation of myocardial ion channels by gene polymorphism. This study is to investigate the association of cardiac ion channel related gene polymorphism and prolonged QTc interval after endotracheal intubation in ad...

Obesity and Lipids: a Matter of Taste?

The purpose of the protocol is to determine the impact of bariatric surgery on taste receptors and taste perceptions and to precise the factors implicated in taste alterations in 50 obese patients before and 6 months after bariatric surgery (25 Roux Y gastric bypass and 25 sleeve gastrectomy).

Does Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) or Complement Factor H Gene Polymorphism Play a Role in the Treatment Success With VEGF Inhibitors in Patients With Choroidal NeoVascularization (CNV)?

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial disease with a strong genetic component. Most importantly a genetic polymorphism in the gene encoding for the complement factor H (CFH) has been recently identified which is highly associated with an increased risk of developing AMD. This Tyr402His polymorphism located on chromosome 1q31 has been implicated to play a role in the development of the disease. For this purpose a total of 200 patients with wet AMD will be ...

Genetics and Fat Taste Sensitivity

A cross-sectional quantitative study will be carried out; recruiting female, Caucasian participants aged 18-65 years. The relevance of candidate gene studies is disputed. Research has shown associations between genotype and total fat intake. However, food preference is often described as a result of exposure to food types during upbringing. Many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) have been associated with fat taste sensitivity, the majority of research shows that with a redu...

Taste Changes With Bariatric Surgery

It is commonly believed that a link exists between BMI and taste perception. One group of researchers observed that women who are obese experience reduced taste sensitivity when compared to normal-weight controls. Others have compared taste sensitivity between lean and obese subjects and found no significant differences. The inconsistencies in these studies demonstrate how much variation in taste sensitivity is possible when different factors are applied in research. Throughout...

The Influence of Gene Polymorphism on Clinical Outcomes in Patients Undergoing PCI

Dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and thienopyridines is an essential treatment in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, despite intensified antiplatelet treatment, some of the patients undergoing PCI develop thrombotic stent occlusion, suggesting incomplete platelet inhibition due to thienopyridine resistance. Some patients develop bleeding event because of the improper dosage and covariation. This observational study is designed for clari...

Does Complement Factor H Gene Polymorphism Play a Role in the Regulation of Vascular Tone in the Choroid?

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial disease with a strong genetic component. Most importantly a genetic polymorphism in the gene encoding for the complement factor H (CFH) has been recently identified which is highly associated with an increased risk of developing AMD. This Tyr402His polymorphism located on chromosome 1q31 has been implicated to play a role in the development of the disease. Given that it is known that impaired regulation of choroidal va...

The Taste-Mood Diagnostic Study

The study will be looking at whether a taste test device can be used as a diagnostic aid for depression. Taste tests will be carried out before and after first use of an antidepressant (prescribed by the patient's GP) and then again a month later a further taste test will be conducted. The results of these tests will be assessed to see if they correlate with the outcome of validated mood questionnaires carried out at the first and second visits.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Taste Perception and Caries Activity in School Children

Four basic taste perceptions and relationship with caries are poorly investigated in children as compared to adults. The aim of this study was to evaluate salty, sweet, bitter and sour taste perceptions of school children and compare them with demographic, clinical, microbiologic and biochemical caries-risk factors.

Genetic Variability in Taste Perception

This proposal describes a pilot study aimed at determining whether genetic variations in taste receptors determine differential taste tolerability of pediatric medications.

Does eNOS Gene Polymorphism Play a Role in the Maintenance of Basal Vascular Tone in the Choroid or Optic Nerve Head?

Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent endothelium-derived vasodilatator that plays a major role in the control of ocular blood flow. Endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) is one of three isoforms of NOS producing NO through hydroxylation of L-arginine. The eNOS gene is located on the long arm of chromosome 7, and different polymorphic variations have been identified. These single nucleotide polymorphisms (sNP´s) have the ability to change transcription activity and therefore enzyme levels. R...

Polymorphism C677T MTHFR and Effects of Folate Intake

The C677T polymorphism in the MTHFR gene is related to several significant biochemical changes, as dyslipidemia, changes in serum levels of homocysteine, folic acid, vitamin B12 and some oxidative stress markers such as the CAT and MDA, leading to a high risk of the emergence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). A diet containing antioxidants, especially folate, is characterized by being beneficial for individuals with this genetic alteration to possess anti-inflammatory function, ...
