Hypersexual Disorder (HD), sometimes called "sexual addiction", is a disorder with intense sexual desires and psychological preoccupations that lead to out-of-control sexual activities with severe consequences. HD is related to higher risks of HIV infection and an important risk factor for committing sexual crimes. The prevalence of HD is 3-6% of the general population, thus, a significant burden for society. The neurobiological mechanisms behind HD are still unknown, and there...
The European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) guidelines have not made any specific recommendations regarding the Portfolio diet, a dietary pattern that includes nuts, viscous fibre, plant protein, and plant sterols. To update the recommendations, the Diabetes and Nutrition Study Group (DNSG) of the EASD commissioned a systematic review and meta-analysis using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to summarize the av...
The purpose of this study is to determine whether addition of strawberries to a dietary portfolio of cholesterol-lowering foods will improve compliance and so increase the effectiveness of the dietary portfolio in lowering cholesterol and improving cardiovascular risk factors.
A feasibility study, randomising to either 10 or 20 mg of tamoxifen. The primary aim is to identify the time to mammographic density change and piloting the procedures. It is known that a density change is seen after 12 months of 20 mg of tamoxifen, but the clinical experience indicates that an effect of drugs influencing mammographic density could be seen already after a few months. The second aim is to evaluate if there is a density change from 10 mg of tamoxifen equivalent t...
Cognition was assessed using Minimental state examination (MMSE), Trail making tests A and B (TMT) tests, P300 and quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) sleepiness was assessed using Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Karolinska sleepiness scale (KSS) and QEEG also polysomnography (PSG) was done for all participated subjects
The capnodynamic method non-invasively calculates effective lung volume (ELV) continuously during surgery. In this study ELV is compared to functionalresidual capacity (FRC) measured with Nitrogen Multiple Breath Wash out (NMBW) at 0 and 5 cm H2O Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) in patients scheduled for neck surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, Sweden.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in cognitive functions at baseline and following night shift at a trauma center among faculty anesthesiologists. We hypothesized that there would be significant reduction in variety of cognitive processes following a night shift.
The capnodynamic method non-invasively calculates effective pulmonary blood flow (EPBF) continuously during surgery. In this study EPBF is compared to cardiac output (CO) measured with Transpulmonary Thermodilution (TPTD) att baseline and during hemodynamic changes in patients scheduled for open abdominal surgery at the Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, Sweden.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a dietary portfolio of cholesterol-lowering foods (viscous fibres, soy protein, plant sterols and nuts) further enhanced by increased levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and low glycemic index foods; together with a structured exercise program reduce the progression of carotid and coronary atheromatous lesions, Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), and blood pressure, while reducing the number of individuals requ...
A single-center prospective study. Patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve surgery between February 2016 and December 2018 at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden are eligible. Femoral cannulation was performed either with surgical cut-down and arterial puncture under direct vision or percutaneously with planned percutaneous arteriotomy closed using a plug-based arteriotomy closure device (MANTA, Essential Medical Inc., Malvern, Pennsylvania). Dat...
Extreme premature Children will at discharge from Karolinska Hospital and Södersjukhuset in Stockholm be asked to participate in a study, examining the effects of a home-visit based post-discharge program aiming at facilitating the interaction between infants and parents, improving the development of the children, and the parental mental health. The study is a randomized controlled Trial (RCT), hence 50% of the participants will be offered treatment as usual (TAU) with additio...
Aim: To study the effect of a dietary intervention with functional foods on gut microbiota in subjects with type 2 diabetes Materials and methods: Patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in a double-blind, parallel-arm, placebo-control study were randomized to receive a dietary portfolio (DP) or placebo (P) treatment for 3 mo. The primary endpoint was the effect of a dietary portfolio based on functional foods on gut microbiota. Secondary endpoints were biochemical paramete...
Low and very low carbohydrate diets, such as the Atkins' Diet, have recently gained attention for their potential health benefits from weight loss and have gained some scientific support from a growing number of studies. Benefits have been noted in relation to raised "good" cholesterol, lower "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides. Other studies have shown an advantage in substituting vegetable fat for carbohydrate in insulin resistant individuals and in some instances in type 2 ...
Patients with type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease will be enrolled. According to a parallel design, the participants will be randomized to a Portfolio diet or a monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA)-rich diet (used as control) for 8 weeks. At the beginning and at the end of the trial, the participants will undergo a MRI spectroscopy to evaluate fatty liver content. Moreover, the participants will undergo a test meal resembling the nutritional composition of the ...
The study is a two-armed randomized cross-over comparison of leakage with nasal prongs and nasal mask interface in newborn infants treated with CPAP, born after 28 weeks of gestational age. For infants with an interface leakage, the trial also includes an observational part evaluating simple measures to reduce leakage. The study will be carried out in the Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm and in the Östersund Hospital.
The goal is to determine if providing a nutritional supplement, phosphatidylcholine, to pregnant women improves early brain development with improved brain-related development during the first four years of life. Participating pregnant women will receive either phosphatidylcholine or a placebo from approximately 16 weeks gestation through birth. The primary outcome is the child's behavior at four years of age as reported by the primary caregiver. Secondary outcomes include moto...

Zinc is necessary for growth and development, including the central nervous system, and zinc deficiency which is common in resource-poor settings, may adversely affect social, behavorial, cognitive and sensorimotor development. The project, located in Lima Peru, utilizes an experimental model in which children receive 10 mg supplemental zinc (or not) daily along with 10 mg iron and 1/2 mg copper from 6 months of age to 18 months of age. Beginning at 6 months of age, and at 9, ...
The study will correlate the volumes of the brain obtained from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans done at term gestation for infants born prematurely who weighed less than 1000 grams at birth with their corresponding development at 18 months corrected age.
The purpose of this study is to compare the effects on visual development, growth, cognitive development, tolerance, and blood chemistry parameters in term infants fed one of four study formulas containing various levels of DHA and ARA.
The purpose of this study is to investigate brain development in autism by longitudinally assessing children with autism, as well as typically developing controls, using advanced MR techniques. We will use longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measures to investigate the protracted development of long-range white matter fibers in autism. In addition, we will investigate the effect of autism risk genes on brain development.

The four cohorts include the Chicago Heart Association Detection Project in Industry cohort, the Peoples Gas Company cohort first examined in 1958-1959, the Peoples Gas Company cohort first examined in 1959-1962, and the Western Electric Company cohort.
The investigators have obtained compelling evidence that the development of anti-human leukocyte antigen (anti-HLA) antibodies against mismatched donor antigens significantly correlates with the development of bronchiolitis obliterans (BOS). Further, these anti-HLA antibodies are developed at least 15 months prior to any clinical evidence of BOS. This lag period between the development of anti-HLA antibodies and the onset of BOS gives us an opportunity to intervene to delay and...
