This study will determine the level of glucose (sugar) in the CSF (fluid that surrounds the spinal cord) in 30 subjects having spinal anesthesia for cesarean section using a bedside glucose meter. Spinal anesthesia is done by injecting drugs through a needle into the CSF. Subjects will have 1/10 tsp of CSF removed at the time of spinal anesthesia to measure the level of glucose. Glucose meters measure glucose, usually in the blood, and they can be used in the operating room. Th...
The purpose of this study is to see whether anti-HIV drugs that reduce HIV in the blood also reduce HIV in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is the fluid found around the brain and spinal cord. This study also looks at whether reducing HIV in the CSF can help protect brain function. HIV can be detected in the brain and CSF early in HIV disease. Anti-HIV drugs probably reduce HIV in the CSF. This may be important because other studies have suggested high CSF HIV levels m...
Patients will undergo magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) scanning to noninvasively measure intracerebral and plasma metabolite levels at baseline and following 2 and 4 hours of hyperglycemia. Subjects will also undergo a lumbar puncture at a separate occasion to assess cerebrospinal fluid levels of metabolites.
RATIONALE: Determining whether erlotinib passes into the cerebrospinal fluid may help in planning treatment for some types of cancer. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well erlotinib is able to pass into the cerebrospinal fluid of patients receiving erlotinib for stage III non-small cell lung cancer.
It is hypothesized that the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, donepezil, will increase acute cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) actylcholine levels in healthy volunteers following a 5mg single dose oral administration.
This research will be achieved by the assessment of p75NTR-ECD expression (total and linked to different species of Aβ (Aβ1-40 and Aβ-1-42)) within the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with AD dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD, frontotemporal dementia and non-neurodegenerative dementia.
To assess the exposure of BI 425809 in cerebrospinal fluid relative to plasma as well as safety and tolerability, and to evaluate the effect of different doses of BI 425809 on biomarkers levels in cerebrospinal fluid.
Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear, colorless fluid that circulates in the cranial and spinal subarachnoid spaces, located between the pia and arachnoid matters. It is mainly produced by the choroid plexus, while lesser amount produced by the ependymal cells lining the ventricles. Its function includes cushioning and lubrication of the central nervous system, circulation of nutrients and waste collection providing basic mechanical and immunological protection to the brain.
The primary purpose of this study is to assess biomarker known as amyloid beta peptide 40 (Ab40) in Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), following a single oral dose of PAZ-417 in subjects with Alzheimer Disease (AD). This study will also consider another biomarker amyloid beta peptide 42 (Ab42) in Cerebrospinal Fluid in subjects with Alzheimer Disease and assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic profile of PAZ-417 in both plasma and Cerebrospinal Fluid in these subjects.
In this project we are collecting cerebrospinal fluid and blood from patients at Vanderbilt Medical Center who have a subarachnoid hemorrhage which has followed the rupture of a brain aneurysm. We then propose to study the cerebrospinal fluid using a novel microscopic laser directed mass spectrometric analysis (MALDI) available at Vanderbilt. The cerebrospinal fluid and blood will then be analysed for different biological markers, protein expression and gene expression. Thes...
The purpose of this study is to define if flow cytometry has more sensitivity for detecting neoplastic cells in cerebrospinal fluid versus conventional cytology.
The purpose of this study is to measure concentrations of Raltegravir in cerebrospinal fluid. The hypotheses are: - Raltegravir concentrations in CSF will be measurable - Raltegravir concentrations in CSF will remain constant, while plasma concentrations vary widely leading to highly variable CSF-to-plasma ratios. - Following at least 4 weeks of Raltegravir-containing combination therapy, HIV RNA levels in CSF will be below 50 copies/mL in all...
RATIONALE: Studying samples of cerebrospinal fluid from patients with cancer or meningeal syndrome may help doctors identify biomarkers related to cancer. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying cerebrospinal fluid samples in diagnosing carcinomatous meningitis in patients with cancer or meningeal syndrome.
The objective of this study is to determine the effects of cerebrospinal fluid sampling rate on biomarker levels of young, healthy volunteers.
The primary purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of JNJ-54175446 (dose response) on levels of Aβ fragments (Aβ1-42, Aβ1-40, Aβ1-38, Aβ1-37) in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the effects of JNJ-54175446 on markers of (neuro) inflammation/protection in blood and CSF and the pharmacokinetics of JNJ-54175446 followed by single and multiple dose administration.
This study is being done to find out how much of the drug raltegravir (RGV) gets into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), compared to how much get into the blood and to find out if normal changes in a certain gene in your body affects how much RGV gets into the CSF.
OBJECTIVES: I. Investigate the pathobiology of Tourette syndrome and related disorders by measuring various compounds of interest in cerebrospinal fluid, plasma, and urine of patients with Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, and/or chronic tics. II. Determine the pattern of familial aggregation of Tourette syndrome and obsessive compulsive disorder by systematic assessment of all first-degree family members of patients selected for cerebrospinal fluid studies. ...
The purpose of this study is: 1. To identify specific set of proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid (fluid surrounding the brain and the spinal cord), that are believed to be seen in Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients, but not in healthy controls (HC). A similar study that the investigators had conducted before, suggested that significant changes in proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid may be due to the fundamental pathology of this disorder. 2. ...
This study evaluates the utility of using cyst fluid glucose levels to diagnose mucinous pancreatic cysts during endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) procedures.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of "A-PROTEIN" levels in patients with brain tumors. A-PROTEIN levels will be analyzed both pre and post treatment. Levels in blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) will be analyzed and correlated with the underlying diagnosis and outcome.
This is a surgical biospecimen collection study. The purpose of this study is to understand how much of two drugs (dabrafenib and trametinib) are able to penetrate brain tumors and turn off the RAF signaling pathway. This is important because these drugs are currently FDA approved for other tumors and may have efficacy in brain tumors with the BRAF V600E mutation. People (adults or children) with brain tumors who are already taking dabrafenib and / or trametinib and are in need...
The objectives of this study are to assess the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) pharmacokinetics and the plasma/CSF pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationship of ABT-384 in healthy male volunteers.
RATIONALE: Studying samples of cerebrospinal fluid from patients with cancer in the laboratory may help doctors identify biomarkers related to cancer. PURPOSE: This laboratory study is studying cerebrospinal fluid proteins and angiogenesis proteins in young patients with newly diagnosed central nervous system tumors.
Sinus surgery is a common procedure. A potential complication is injuring the membranes of the brain. This can lead to leakage of brain fluid through the nose. We would like to estimate the incident rates of that complication. At the end of the operation, a thin gauze is inserted into the nose on both sides in addition to the usual tampon. This gauze will be analyzed at the laboratory for beta-2-transferrin, which is a biomarker for brain liquid.
