The current study aims to determine if transverse abdominis plane block using local anesthetic agents (bupivacaine 0.25% + Ropivacaine 0.20%) decreases the post operative pain and helps in early mobilization or discharge from hospital in patients undergoing laparoscopic ventral hernia repair.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a specific airway clearance technique, l'Expiration Lente Prolongée (ELPr), induces or aggravates gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants under the age of one year. Infants referred to hospital for a multichannel intraluminal impedance pH (pH-MII) monitoring are included in this study. Participation is only possible after signing the informal consent by one of the parents.

A double-blinded, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of liraglutide 3.0 mg in patients with poor weight-loss and a suboptimal glucagon-like peptide-1 response following bariatric surgery
This study will examine whether an adapted version of ]he Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) can be effective when delivered by community health workers (CHWs) in a poor urban community in South Africa. We will randomize existing groups that are part of an non-governmental organization's (NGO) chronic disease management program (anticipated cluster N = 54; anticipated individual N=540), to receive either the program or usual care (wait-list). The primary outcome analysis will co...

Investigators propose a prospective cohort study to develop and validate essential technical parameters for establishing the perioperative symptom management cohort in patients with lung cancer. With 300 patients with lung cancer who are going to have surgery, this study will administrate symptom assessments (MDASI-LC) on the first day of hospitalization, the day before surgery, daily after surgery (in hospital), and weekly after discharge, up to 4 weeks.
Chronic renal disease (CKD) is defined as a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and / or proteinuria or albuminuria (a protein present in urine). Albuminuria is considered a marker of endothelial dysfunction. Proteinuria and / or albuminuria are recognized as cardiovascular risk factors in both diabetic and non-diabetic populations, independently of GFR. It is also a marker of progression of kidney disease. cluster of differentiation 146 (CD146) is an endothelial adhes...
Scientific context Epstein-Barr virus has a causal role in the pathogenesis of multiple distinct lymphomas. Post-transplant lymphoproliferative diseases (PTLD) are the most frequent EBV-induced proliferations. PTLD after allogeneic stem cell transplantation has an incidence lower than 5% but may increase up to 10-20% in patients with established risk factors. EBV-DNAemia is predictive of EBV-PTLD and is routinely performed using qPCR on whole blood. Preemptive therapeuti...
Modern way of life characterized by decreased physical activity and poor dietary habits seems to be an important trigger for the onset of metabolic disorders. Accumulating evidence indicates that the gut microbiota is involved in host metabolism by increasing energy extraction, immune system modulation, and altering lipid metabolism, which play an intricate role in metabolic disorders, such as obesity and diabetes. Diet has a major role in shaping the composition and activity o...
Although aortic valve replacement is recommended for any symptomatic severe calcific aortic stenosis, the therapeutic decision may be difficult. because of patient age and comorbidities. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) has recently extended the therapeutic indications in patients at high risk of surgery. However, the proportion of different treatments is not known in a contemporary population that can be treated according to the different resources current...

Chronic pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with impaired exercise capacity, quality of life and right ventricular function. The disease is characterized by an increase of pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary arterial pressure, leading to right heart insufficiency. Despite optimized combination-medical therapy most patients remain symptomatic, have reduced exercise capacity, quality of life and reduced survival rates, with an annual mortality rate of approximately...
Infants with an estimated gestational age < 36 6/7 weeks at delivery who have been in an incubator in the newborn ICU for at least 24 hours will be randomized to either standard protocol of open crib or mylar-lined cardboard cot for the duration of the hospital stay. This 5-year study evaluates the effects of a 10-week group-based linguistically translated and culturally adapted cognitive-behavioral stress and self-management (C-CBSM) intervention on symptom burden and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in Hispanic men treated for localized prostate cancer (PC). About 80% PC cases are diagnosed as early disease and have a 5- and 10-year survival rate of almost 100% and 99%, respectively. Most patients receive active treatment (~70%) lea...

For the increasing numbers of patients undergoing fusion procedures for the degenerative lumbar spine, infection and re-operation can negatively impact outcomes. Numerous observational and retrospective reviews have shown advantages to para-median versus midline approaches; however, recent systematic reviews have shown a need for a well-powered, prospective randomized control trials comparing both exposures. As a step towards a long-term goal of an RCT to address this issue, th...

All subjects were administered a test of vigilance (Test of Attentional Performance) both before and after the 6 months of CPAP. The main objective is the study of the reversibility of alertness disorders on the ...
Red blood cells contain a chemical called haemoglobin which carries oxygen from the lungs around the body. When the amount of haemoglobin is reduced, we say that a patient is 'anaemic'. Anaemia can have many causes, but affects about a third of patients having major surgery in hospital. After their operation these anaemic patients are more likely to suffer serious complications. This may be because the body needs extra oxygen - and so enough haemoglobin - to heal and recover su...
