This study evaluates the effectiveness of coaching and Voices for Food materials on establishing Food Policy Councils (FPCs) and using guided client choice in rural food pantries to improve food security and diet quality among food pantry clients, and to improve the food environment in rural, midwestern food pantries. Half of the communities received coaching and the Voices for Food kit, the other half only received the Voices for Food kit.
Rutgers University will partner with the Meals on Wheels America (MOWA) and affiliated agencies in five states to conduct a study designed to improve food safety nutrition and emergency preparedness among homebound elderly recipients of home delivered meals (HDM). This population is at increased risk for food borne diseases, as a result of unique physiological and behavioral factors, and is particularly vulnerable to any disruptions in the food system because of their lack of m...
This investigation is being carried out to learn more about research findings from a study that was completed last year. Those findings revealed that within the skeletal muscle cells of individuals with type 2 diabetes, there was often damage to the mitochondria (the muscle cell's power source or the machinery of the muscle cell that produces energy). In individuals with type 2 diabetes, the liver continues to release sugar even when sugar levels are normal; the pancreas is n...
The purpose of the study is to test a food supplement to: - Show that the food supplement is well tolerated and safe to feed to infants; - Find out how often parents/caregivers feed their infants the food supplement; - Find out how parents/caregivers usually add the food supplement to infants' regular solid or liquid food; and - Learn what aspects of the food supplement are more or less attractive to infants and to parents/caregivers.
The purpose of this study is to test the use of a smartphone app as a way to measure food waste. Investigators propose to improve the accuracy and convenience of household food waste measurement so that consumer food waste program evaluations yield more power, less bias, less measurement error, and greater representation of targeted populations.
Food allergies are becoming more prevalent with more children being diagnosed with food allergies each year. Food allergies place a tremendous burden not just on the patient but on his/her family as well. In an attempt to provide better care to the investigators patients, the investigators would like to determine if regular contact with our food allergy nurse has a positive effect on a family's perceived quality of life.
This is a single-center, prospective, pilot clinical trial in which children ages 5-17 years with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) who have a known food that triggers EoE flares receive oral desensitization with that specific food antigen, followed by reintroduction of that food into the diet.
The study hypothesizes that vegetable and protein consumed before a carbohydrate will reduce the glucose response. The vegetables and protein consumed before carbohydrate have different effects on insulin and satiety responses.
The aim of such study is to compare three different school-based (in nurseries, kindergartens and primary schools) interventions aimed at teaching to families how to prevent food choking injuries. The topic of food choking primary and secondary prevention is placed in a more general topic regarding food safety, including education on food labeling and on food waste prevention.
This clinical investigation is to evaluate the safety, performance, and efficacy of a novel endoscopic technique for resolving esophageal food impactions by using a novel hollow suction catheter, Piranha GI Aspiration Catheter, to core out and suction food away from the center of an impaction. This technique includes hollowing out the center of the impaction, thus reducing the volume of the food bolus in the center, allowing the food to collapse into the hollow center, and then...
Many population studies include food questionnaires (recording the normal food intake or the food intake of the study day). This is necessary, because diet is an important lifestyle factor, although food questionnaires are time-consuming and expensive. Moreover, mis-reporting is a very common problem. We therefore seek for a tool to validate food protocol. The hypothesis is to find biochemical marker for animal protein, fruit intake and grape consumption in urinary metab...
Information about Americans' food choices and opinions helps researchers and law makers to develop policies and programs to promote health. For this reason, it is important to be able to collect good quality information about how people think about food. This project will compare different ways of collecting information about food from adults.
This study aims to disentangle the relative contribution of the anticipatory (food images) versus consummatory (food administration) component of dopamine release to food reward, by performing simultaneous Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) scanning. Additionally, this study aims to assess the relationship of the dopamine release with (changes in) metabolic hormone levels.
The objective of this cross-sectional study was to characterize the dietary intake of SNAP participants and nonparticipants by food source, including grocery stores, sit-down restaurants, and fast food.
Genetic Predictive Model Based on Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in the DNA Repair Pathway and Drug Metabolis/Transport Pharmacogenetics in the Prediction of Response and Treatment Outcomes in Acute Myeloid Leukemia
The main component in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is consist of anthracycline (such as daunorubicin or idarubicin) and cytarabine. Inter-individual variability of transport/metabolism of the chemotherapeutic agent and several genetic pathways involved in the drug action might be associated with different response following the treatment for AML usually consisted of chemotherapy and/or transplantation. One of potential pathways involved in the drug action is DN...
Few studies have been conducted to optimize safety of oral immunotherapy(OIT) in conjunction with Omalizumab as well as to identify the immunological mechanism(s) underlying any long-lasting effects of OIT. To address these issues in the field of food allergy research, we have designed this study to test whether: 1) Omalizumab improves the safety of OIT in subjects with multi food allergies, 2) Omalizumab treatment with multiple food allergen OIT is associated with the ability ...
This trial investigates the value created by the highly innovative Fresh Food Farmacy (FFF) program at Geisinger Health. The program provides food-insecure diabetics with healthy food for their entire household: at least two meals per day, five days a week. The program also provides education on how to prepare the food, and education on healthy living including diabetes self management. The research measures the effects of the FFF program on patient health and wellbeing.
To optimize the food security in quilombolas communities with high prevalence of food insecurity and obesity, the present study proposes to test a multi-sector intervention including agriculture sectors, health professionals and family members of communities, based on promotion of traditional food practices, health eating and enforceability of human right to adequate food.
Previous research has shown that nutritional knowledge is a key indicator in healthy eating choices, but real-life examinations of the associations between both nutritional knowledge and state of hunger and satiety on individuals' food choice of healthy vs unhealthy snacks is limited (Drichoutis, Lazaridis, & Nayga, 2005; Grunert, Wills, & Fernandez-Celemin, 2010; Nayga, 2000; Petrovici, Fearne, Nayga, & Drolias, 2012; Soederberg Miller & Cassady, 2015; Viola, Bianchi, Croce, &...
The objective of this study is to compare the ocular response to CAC (using food allergen sensitive patients) to the systemic response of a previously performed oral food allergen challenge in the same subjects. This study will investigate the potential utility of CAC as a predictive tool for identifying patient response to food allergen challenge and maximum tolerated dose.
This study is designed to obtain data on the safety and efficacy of oral nitroglycerin solution for the treatment of esophageal food impaction in patients presenting to the Emergency Department with presumed esophageal food impaction. The main hypothesis is to determine the success rate of oral nitroglycerin solution in relieving the food impaction by assessing the resolution of symptoms and the ability of the patient to swallow.
The purpose of this study is to test the effects of chromium picolinate on food intake, food cravings, eating attitudes, and appetite. If chromium picolinate is found to have a beneficial impact on satiety and food intake, then this supplement may be an alternative or adjunctive treatment for overweight people desiring to modify their food intake. The primary hypothesis of this study is that among individuals who report being carbohydrate cravers, chromium picolinate suppleme...
Rationale: Online-grocery shopping is predicted to be one of the "hottest" food trends of 2014, as national retailers such as Amazon, as well as start-up companies, venture into the e- commerce grocery sector. Importantly, the online-grocery environment could be uniquely manipulated to promote healthier food purchasing and help with weight control. Since consumers tend to choose items listed first on menus and buffet lines, the order of food products displayed on the grocer's w...
The investigators aim to discover if people of different demographic levels are more or less attentive to changes in calorie information vs. changes in price information on a restaurant menu. The investigators will record whether the calorie/price change was noticed or not, as well as how quickly the calorie/price change was noticed, depending on condition and individual differences.
