Mechanisms that link metabolic syndrome to atherosclerosis are incompletely understood. As a part of Hämeenlinna Metabolic Syndrome Research Program (HMS), 40 men with metabolic syndrome and their 40 physically active controls (age: 30 to 65 years) are compared in a cross-sectional study. Except routine laboratory parameters, arterial elasticity and levels of oxidized LDL are determined. Study hypothesis: Levels of oxidized LDL and findings in arterial elasticity may differ ...
A six-month clinical research trial to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational medication for the treatment of dry eye syndrome in patients that have been diagnosed with moderate to severe dry eye syndrome, an autoimmune disorder AND/OR females 65 years of age or older.
Mechanisms that link metabolic syndrome to atherosclerosis are incompletely understood. As a part of Hämeenlinna Metabolic Syndrome Research Program (HMS) surrogate indicators for atherosclerosis are studied in 120 men with metabolic syndrome, 120 men with coronary heart disease and 80 physically active controls and in different settings.
The purpose of this research study is to develop a way of predicting with computers how surgery on the airway will affect night time breathing called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in children with Down Syndrome. Subjects will be in the research study for approximately a year. Participation in this research study will involves a screening visit and 1 overnight sleep study (PSG) for research purposes that will be done before airway surgery. During the research sleep study, ...
A 14-Week clinical research study to compare the effectiveness and safety of ropinirole and placebo (an inactive sugar pill) in the treatment of patients with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) in the United States.
This study may provide information that may serve as the foundation for a larger research study to address issues regarding the causes, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis in the Down syndrome patient population.
The objective of this research is to verify the language of children with Down syndrome concerning lexical, syntactic and semantic aspects using MLU. The hypothesis is that children with Down syndrome will present low performance, regarding not only the quantitative measures as MLU-m, MLU-w, GM-1 and GM-2, but also regarding the qualitative aspects of their production, when compared to children with typical development.
The purpose of these series research project is to investigate the prevalence, symptoms cluster and characteristic; establish the systemic symptom management nursing strategies (PMS-SMP); determine short-and long-term effectiveness of PMS-SMP. To enhance the health related quality of life of women with Perimenstrual syndrome. Simultaneously, the PMS-SMP offers a research and clinical based protocol to demonstrate the independent nursing role and practice care model. The 3-year ...
The purpose of this study is to provide qualified and approved researchers with access to biological samples and health information to answer specific research questions. This project will significantly increase the speed of Down syndrome research and the understanding of associated medical conditions such as leukemia and Alzheimer's disease.
The purpose of this research is to determine if thymus transplantation with immunosuppression is a safe and effective treatment for complete DiGeorge syndrome. The research will include studies to evaluate whether this procedure will result in complete DiGeorge syndrome infants developing a normal immune system.
The research is devoted to studying the features of the metabolic syndrome in cancer survivors in childhood is supposed to answer the following questions: - How can metabolic syndrome be diagnosed in the Russian population of survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas? - What are the features of the clinical symptoms of metabolic syndrome in this category of patients? - Which genetic mutations are found in cancer survivors ...
1. PHACE syndrome(OMIM database number 606519) is the association of a vascular birthmark (hemangioma) on the face along with one or more of the following conditions: congenital heart defects, congenital anomalies of the cerebral arteries, brain, eyes, or sternum. 2. A research study is currently being conducted at the Oregon Health & Science University to investigate if there is an inherited cause of PHACE syndrome. 3. We are hoping that this study will lea...
The purpose of this research study is to find out what effects, good and/or bad, erlotinib has on the patient and their myelodysplastic syndrome. Erlotinib has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat non-small cell lung cancer; however, erlotinib use in this study is considered investigational as the FDA has not approved it for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome.
A 12-week clinical research study to evaluate the tolerability, efficacy and safety of ropinirole compared to placebo(an inactive sugar pill) in the treatment of patients with RLS in the United States.
To evaluate safety and tolerability of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in children from 6 to 12 years old with Intellectual Developmental Disorders (IDD) (Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome).
The purpose of this research study is to determine which measures best capture cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and type 2 diabetes (T2DM) risk in children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). We hypothesize that DS is associated with worse cardiometabolic risk factors for a given body mass index compared to controls. This difference arises at least in part, from increased fat tissue.
This is a pilot and feasibility study of transplant eligible, higher risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients to determine the safety and tolerability of a lower -dose and higher-dose CPX-351 regimen, with secondary objectives including complete remission (CR) rates and proportion of patients proceeding to transplant.
The purpose of this research study is to learn about the effects of treating subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) with thyroid hormone replacement in children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). We hypothesize that treatment of SCH with thyroid hormone replacement will improve cardiometabolic health and quality of life.
The purpose of this research study is to gain a preliminary understanding of the safety of sirolimus in Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) and determine best outcomes to be used to assess the utility of sirolimus for the treatment of cognitive impairments related to Sturge-Weber syndrome.
Patients with Williams-Beuren syndrome are eight times more likely to suffer from anxiety compared to the general population. Few therapeutic solutions are proposed to these patients. The objective of this research is to validate a cognitive and behavioral therapy anxiety protocol for patients with this syndrome.
There have been many improvements in the care of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). This has helped these children survive longer. Because these children now live longer, researchers are recognizing developmental disabilities (the children are behind in their thinking or physical activity) in children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. The purpose of this research study is to help the investigators learn more about developmental disabilities in children w...
Transient left ventricular ballooning syndrome (TLVBS) is a cardiac syndrome that is characterised by acute but transient left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Since the syndrome clearly is not a rare phenomenon and since prognosis is not as benign as originally thought, there is a need for further research into the etiology and pathophysiology of TLVBS. Therefore the investigators aim to study the microvascular and endothelial function in their population of TLVBS patients.
The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Diagnosis and Treatment Trial is project #1 of the Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Center focused on upper extremity pain. It is a randomized trial comparing surgical and nonsurgical treatments for patients with early, mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome. In addition the study will evaluate the ability of a new magnetic resonance (MR) technique at predicting who will likely benefit from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) surgery.
The goal of this clinical research study is to learn if clofarabine given by mouth on a weekly schedule can help to control Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). The safety of clofarabine given by mouth will also be studied.
The aim of this study is to assess the frequency of metabolic syndrome in Down syndrome patients because the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and obesity is higher in individuals with Down syndrome than in the general population.
