Recent research has focused on examining brief interventions for reducing self-harm, such as the volitional help sheet (VHS). The VHS is a theory-based psychological intervention. Two previous studies applying this tool for reducing self-harm repetition showed inconsistent results; one showed reduced subsequent self-reported suicidal ideation and behavior in patients presenting to hospital for self-harm, whilst the other showed no effect on the number of patients who re-present...
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the efficiency of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in treatment of adolescents with deliberate self harm compared to treatment-as-usual (TAU). 150 patients in the age of 12-18 yrs old will be included in the study. The main inclusion criterion is repetitive deliberate self-harm. The patients will receive 16 weeks treatment in outpatient clinics in Oslo, after having been randomized to DBT or TAU. They will be assessed on five different ...
This randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluates whether HIV self-testing (HIVST) facilitates sexual harm reduction and reduces HIV transmission among HIV-negative MSM in China. The intervention group will be offered HIVST kits plus harm reduction education, and followed 9 month, while the control group will receive harm reduction educational material only.
Deliberate Self-Harm (DSH) among adolescents is a serious behavioral problem associated with significant injury, impaired functioning, reduced quality of life, and high rates of psychiatric hospitalizations. While DSH has not been shown to have a direct link to suicide attempts themselves, there is a clear link between individuals who engage in DSH and overall rates of suicide. There is currently no medication treatment approved by the FDA for the treatment of DSH. The...
The purpose of the research is to evaluate whether routine screening for woman abuse in health care settings, as compared to no screening, does more good than harm. Recent reviews have identified the need for high quality research to understand 1) the actual impact on all women of instituting mass screening procedures to identify woman abuse and 2) the extent to which early identification through screening is effective in preventing or ameliorating important outcomes. The mai...
We conducted a pre-post naturalistic study regarding changes observed associated with a 15-week course of an adapted form of dialectical behaviour therapy for adolescents. We measured frequency of self-harm prior to treatment and after treatment using the Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors Interview. We also measured changes using the Suicide Ideation Questionnaire, Life Problems Inventory, Resiliency Scale for Children and Adolescents.
Self-harm has substantial personal impacts as well as costs on the NHS. Around 13-17% of young people report experiences of self-harm. In Cambridgeshire, this is a significant issue with the number of admissions to hospital for self-harm in young people being higher than the UK average. Treating underlying mental illness can lead to a reduction in self-harm, but these are long interventions for complex disorders and many people who self-harm are not under treatment for mental i...
Women prisoners are more likely to commit suicide or self-harm than women in the community or male prisoners. Healthcare services have improved how they manage self-harm in the community and prisons. However, there has been little focus on the recovery of people with self-harm scars. Medical skin camouflage (MSC) is a British National Formulary-listed topical cream designed to cover skin conditions. Research on MSC has focused on its use with non-self-harm marks e.g. burns. ...
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the long-term efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in treatment of adolescents with deliberate self harm compared to enhanced usual care (EUC). This study follows-up 80 patients in the ages of 12-18 yrs who have been included in an RCT of DBT-A vs EUC. The main inclusion criterion for this study was repetitive self-harm behaviour. The patients were randomly allocated to receive 16 weeks of outpatient DBT or EUC in child and adol...
Teicoplanin is an antibiotic used very commonly to prevent infection during surgery. Its use has expanded rapidly in the last few years, with around 18,500 doses administered in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust alone, in 2014-15. Unfortunately, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) to the drug appears to be increasing. These reactions can result in admission to intensive care, prolong hospital stay, or even be fatal. It is vital that patients who suffer anaphylaxis have t...
The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of using e-cigarettes as a method for harm reduction and the effects of providing e-cigarettes (or placebo e-cigarettes) on smoking outcomes. Participants will be randomized to receive either e-cigarettes with nicotine cartridges or e-cigarettes with placebo cartridges, and followed for 3 weeks.
Study Aims/Objectives: This projects' Primary Aim is development of a Condensed DBT Stepped Care Model tailored to the unique requirements of students meeting sub-clinical diagnostic criteria for BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) with its associated high rate of self-harm and suicide.
The purpose of the study is to test a standardized version of brief admission (BA) through randomized controlled trial (RCT). The main objective is to evaluate if BA can serve as a crisis management model for individuals with recurrent self-harm, including suicide attempts and at least three symptoms of Borderline Personality disorder. Participants will be allocated to BA + Treatment as Usual (TAU) or TAU.
To investigate how discussions surrounding Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (DNACPR) decisions have changed following the Tracey judgement and how "harm" is being defined by clinicians working within specialist palliative care in a hospice setting.
This research study is looking for patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML), AML that has returned (relapsed), or it has not responded adequately to previous treatments. Treating certain patients with chemotherapy may not be to their benefit or may cause more harm than benefit. The purpose of this study is to find out what effects (good and bad) erlotinib has on patients and their AML.
To evaluate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a culturally adapted therapy (C-MAP) in patients with a history of self-harm
The role of impulsivity and its contribution to suicidal behavior seems intuitively clear. Empirical results have proved the existence of a relationship between the two yet many questions are left unanswered, especially what differentiates suicide ideators from attempters.. Obsessive thinking patterns are thought processes which share a repetitive behavior domain and are exerted by an inner voice. 3 types of obsessive thinking patterns are self destructive thoughts, ruminations...
Mumps is an acute infectious respiratory disease caused by the mumps virus (MuV), which occurs mainly in children and adolescents. Its main clinical symptoms were parotid gland suppurative swelling and pain with fever. The pathological changes and harm caused by mumps was not only confined to the parotid gland, on the contrary, the social harm caused by serious complications cannot be ignored. As mumps is a vaccine-preventable infectious disease, vaccination is a fundamental st...
The study will determine whether community-based caring contact via a mobile app connection with or without volunteer support in addition to treatment as usual (psychiatric and psychosocial treatments) has an effect on suicidal ideation and treatment compliance among post-discharge self-harm young adults.
This is a prospective parallel group design of group-based Mentalization-Based Therapy for Adolescents (MBT-A) through a pilot randomised controlled trial comparing group-based MBT-A plus treatment as usual (TAU) to TAU alone. As a pilot study, we aim to determine: the effectiveness of our recruitment strategies; compliance with protocol/procedures; trends towards reduced self-harm.
This is a Phase 3 clinical study, which aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an investigational drug PLX3397 in the treatment of tumour of pigmented villonodular synovitis or giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath in subjects, for whom surgical removal of the tumour would cause more harm than good. The main purpose of this study is to gather information about the investigational drug PLX3397, which may help to treat these tumours. The study consists of two parts. In Part 1, el...
The goal of the study is to test the efficacy of brief physician advice in reducing the frequency of high risk drinking and alcohol-related harm in a population of university students seeking routine care at UBC Student Health Service. It is hypothesized that receiving the intervention will reduce the amount of alcohol consumed and the incidence of alcohol-related harm among the students in the intervention group, as compared to the control group.
Doctor's attire acts as an important criteria in setting up good relationship between patient and physician. Recent evidence as well as strong viewpoints have highlighted the possible harm of wearing a white coat. In order to get the patient's perspective on the same, this observational study is being conducted to determine the effect of wearing a white coat on patient satisfaction in an Indian setting , in patients who visit rheumatology outpatient department,in Columbia Asia ...
Inaccurate perceptions of the severity of an exposure may result in unnecessary visits to the Emergency Department or Health Care Facility which can result in crowding of Emergency Departments, unnecessary utilization of valuable health care resources, unnecessary treatments, and or mistakes / errors resulting in harm to the patient. Inaccurate perceptions about the severity of an exposure can result in delays in proper evaluation and treatment resulting in harm or in some cas...
People who sustain moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) have an increased risk for unintentional injury and harm when resuming day to day activities in the home and community. People who sustain brain injuries primarily want to independently do the activities they enjoy while families primarily focus on avoiding injury or other harm events. Safe@Home is an injury prevention education and activity training program. Participants who have sustained a moderate or severe ...
