The PRE-OP ENERGY Trial proposes to test the overarching hypothesis that a pre-surgery high energy diet will protect patients against organ damage during cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
This will be a single centre study at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong. Patients will be identified from an existing registry of diabetes patients with CKD. Potential subjects will be identified from patients attending diabetes, general medical and renal clinics. Following informed consent, patients will undergo screening where baseline HbA1c, renal function will be measured along withcomprehensive medical and drug history to confirm eligibility. All eligible patients w...
The objective of the study is to evaluate histomorphometrically the healing at implants installed with standard or very low insertion torque values.
Single ventricle defects make up the severe end of the congenital heart disease spectrum. The Fontan operation leads to a complete redirection of systemic venous blood outside of the heart and directly into the lungs. Patients with single ventricles suffer from multiple complications. Their survival has improved over the past decades, but is still severely compromised compared to the general population. Their evaluation includes echocardiography and functional status by histor...
Background: It is predicted that the nasal tip support will decrease with aging due to weakening of cartilage and connective tissues. However, there is no consensus on the age at which this change began. It is quite difficult to evaluate the nasal tip support, while the ideal nasal tip support pressure is also not known. The aim of this study is to determine the nasal tip support pressure alterations in various age groups, by measuring nasal tip support with a Newton met...
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common diseases worldwide and is considered a public health problem. The World Health Organization estimates that about 210 million people have COPD. Disease-related mortality is more than 3 million, representing 5% of all deaths, 90% of this mortality being concentrated in middle- and low-income countries. COPD can be subdivided into chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Emphysema, the focus of this project, is histol...
Ultrasound is widely in uses for vascular, nerve block and sometimes neuraxial block. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the impact of a handheld ultrasound device on the time to complete labor epidural placement and success rate of epidural analgesia in parturients with a wide range of body mass indexes (BMIs). A handheld ultrasound device (Accuro, Rhivanna Medical, Charlottesville, VA) may eliminate the time for equipment setup due to its portability and instant power-u...
Abstract Aim: The primary aim of this study is to test whether or not cement residues in the submucosal environment of implants lead to a change in the microbiota and induce inflammation of the periimplant tissues. Material and Methods: 24 patients in need of a single tooth replacement will be enrolled in this cross-over controlled clinical study. All patients will receive a two-piece dental implant, which will be restored with both a cemented and a screw-...
Twelve patients with relapsed malignant pleural mesothelioma will be treated with intratumoral injections of MTG201, a replication incompetent adenovirus, modified by the insertion of the reduced expression in immortalized cells (REIC)/Dikkopf (Dkk)-3 gene, on Days 1, 8, 22, and 50. Patients will also receive every 4 weekly intravenous infusions of nivolumab, 480 mg, starting on Day 2. Safety and anti-tumor activity will be monitored at regular intervals throughout the study.
The purpose of this clinical study is to evaluate the acute safety and effectiveness of the next-generation Portico™ NG Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve as assessed by the rate of all-cause mortality at 30 days and the rate of freedom from moderate or greater paravalvular leak at 30 days in a high or extreme surgical risk patient population to support CE (Conformité Européenne) Mark and FDA approval.
The LIAR-Trial is a single-center, single blind randomized controlled clinical trial comparing patients undergoing isolated AVR via J-shaped upper hemi-sternotomy (UHS) and conventional AVR through a full median sternotomy (FMS). Primary outcome is cardiac-specific quality of life, measured by two domains of the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ), up to one year after surgery.
To evaluate whether patients after successful transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), who have concomitant, moderate to severe mitral regurgitation (MR) benefit from an additional treatment of this valve disease as well.
The purpose of the RESPOND EDGE post market study is to collect real world clinical and device performance outcomes data with the Lotus Edge™ Valve System used in routine clinical practice to demonstrate that the commercially available Lotus Edge Valve System is a safe and effective treatment for patients with severe calcific aortic stenosis.
When soft palate defects lead to palatal insufficiency, the patient's quality of life is affected by difficulties swallowing, hypernasality, and poor intelligibility of speech. If immediate surgical reconstruction is not an option, the patient may benefit from the placement of a rigid obturator prosthesis. Unfortunately, the residual muscle stumps are often unable to adequately move this stiff and inert obturator to properly restore the velopharyngeal valve function. The object...
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of setting airway pressure release valve (APL valve) on the anesthesia workstation to 5 cmH2O during spontaneous breathing on preoxygenation. In this prospective study healthy volunteers are randomized in cross-over between spontaneous breathing with the APL valve on spontaneous position or spontaneous breathing with the APL valve on 5 cmH2O or CPAP (continous positive airway pressure) mode with 5 cmH2O PEEP (positive end expi...
Minimally Invasive or Conventional Edge-To-Edge Repair for Severe Mitral Regurgitation Due to Bileaflet Prolapse in Barlow's Disease: Does the Surgical Approach Have an Impact on the Long-term Results?
The study evaluates the long-term results of patients affected by bileaflet prolapse in Barlow's Disease, treated with edge-to-edge technique between 1997 and 2011.
The objective of the study is to confirm the safety and efficacy of the BIOMONITOR III system. Furthermore, the insertion procedure, the use and handling of the incision and insertion tools and the sensing quality of the BIOMONITOR III will be assessed.
The study collects real-world data of patients who were treated with the Acurate Neo TAVI System and evaluates early and midterm clinical outcomes.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the procedural and clinical outcomes of patients with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
Mitral valve reconstruction via minimal invasive antero- lateral thoracotomy is done in cardioplegia with a cardioplegic solution, either HTK-Bretschneider (Custidiol®) (a crystalloid intracellular solution) or St. Thomas (a crystalloid extracellular solution). This study investigates HTK-Bretschneider versus St. Thomas cardioplegic solution regarding peri- and postoperative outcome, especially for cardiac biomarkers.
The purpose of the study is to compare early and 1-year hemodynamic performance and clinical outcomes after aortic valve replacement using two pericardial bioprosthesis, Avalus and Carpentier Edwards Perimount Magna Ease.
the current study was conducted to assess efficacy of vaginal misoprostol before IUD insertion following previous insertion failure
To demonstrate reduction of TR with durable performance and improvements in functional status
This study aims at studying the frequency of infective endocarditis after transcatheter aortic valve replacement/implantation
Post sphinterotomy-bleeding (PSB) occurs in 1-2 % of Endosocpic Retrograde Cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) and usually needs no blood transfusion after endoscopic therapy but can be life-threatening in some rare cases. There are no prospective comparative studies concerning the endoscopic treatment of PSB due to the rarity of the incident. Insertion of an endoprosthesis in the common bile duct may be more effective than Epinephrin-injection into the papilla which is t...
