The main goal of this study is to begin to address the void of information on safety, tolerability and effectiveness of Equetro in the treatment of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder.
The purpose of this study is to look at certain structural changes in the brain in people with bipolar disorder or those with a history of Bipolar disorder. Also collecting a blood sample for genetic testing as relationship of genetics and changes in the brain.
This will be an 8-week open-label trial, using daily doses of paliperidone (Invega) in the treatment of children and adolescents who meet DSM-IV criteria of Bipolar I, Bipolar II, or Bipolar Spectrum Disorder. Specific hypotheses are as follows: Hypothesis 1: Bipolar Disorder symptomatology in children and adolescents with DSM-IV Bipolar I, Bipolar II, or Bipolar Spectrum Disorder will be responsive to Invega treatment. Hypothesis 2: Invega -associated improvement in bipolar...
This is a single center, open prospective study to evaluate the effectiveness of quetiapine monotherapy in the maintenance treatment of adolescent patients with a bipolar spectrum disorder (bipolar I and bipolar II disorders, cyclothymia, and bipolar disorder not otherwise specified [bipolar NOS]) for a minimum of 48 weeks. Patients will be screened (enrolment phase) either when already stabilized or during an acute episode of mania/hypomania or depression.
The study aims to evaluate a psychological intervention for individuals who suffer from sleep disturbance and bipolar disorder. We are hoping that this treatment will: (1) improve the quality of life of individuals with bipolar disorder who are suffering from sleep disturbance and (2) reduce the risk of, or help prevent, episodes.
This study will examine the impact of comorbid personality disorder on the outcome of treatment among patients with bipolar I disorder.
Bipolar disorder is a common and often chronic and debilitating mental illness. The depressive phase of bipolar disorder contributes the largest portion of the disorder, and treatment resistant bipolar depression represents a significant public health problem. Recent research has suggested that bipolar depression is associated with elevated brain glutamate activity. We hypothesize that riluzole, a drug approved for ALS which inhibits glutamate activity, will lead to clinical im...
The primary aims of this study are to: 1. Quantify serotonin transporter (5-HTT) binding potential (BP) in vivo in bipolar disorder patients (BPD) during a major depressive episode (MDE). 2. Assess the effect of lithium treatment of bipolar disorder on 5-HTT. 3. Assess the effect of lithium treatment of bipolar disorder on 5-HT1A BP. 4. Assess the effect of lamotrigine treatment of bipolar disorder on 5-HTT and 5-HT1A BP. 5. Assess the effect of lithiu...
The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and efficacy (how well the drug works) of risperidone compared to placebo (an inactive drug) in the treatment of bipolar disorder with panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. Risperidone is currently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar mania. Risperidone is not currently FDA approved for the treatment of bipolar hypomani...
We are trying to understand what causes bipolar disorder and how medications treat bipolar depression. Particularly, we are looking at the importance of dopamine signaling in the process. If you participate, you will have two different brain scans (MRI and PET scan). You will also have treatment for your depression with an FDA approved medication, lurasidone (Latuda). The study is funded by the Columbia University Irving Institute to improve the treatment of bipolar disorder. P...
The UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience in Los Angeles, CA, is conducting a study looking at similarities and differences in how the brain works between bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric illness with clinical characteristics of mixed mania, grandiose delusions, and suicidality. This study will investigate the efficacy a safety of oxcarbazepine in the treatment of patients with bipolar disorder type I or II.
Bipolar disorder is a severe and chronic illness associated with significant occupational and social impairment, enormous public health costs, and high rates of suicide. The single most potent risk factor for the development of bipolar disorder is a first-degree family member with the illness; indeed, offspring of parents with bipolar disorder are a particularly high-risk group who typically display early onset and severe course of illness. Thus, early assessment and interventi...
The aim of this study is to improve outcomes in people with bipolar disorder (BD) by comparing two new online interventions specifically designed to improve quality of life amongst people who have had multiple (10 or more) episodes of BD.
The purpose of this research is to compare how safely and how well this medicine works in treating children and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 17 years with a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder.
The goal of the Pediatric Bipolar Registry (PBR) is to provide a comprehensive assessment regarding the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric bipolar disorder to children and adolescents with any current mood state and/or children/adolescents who are offspring of a parent with bipolar disorder (BD) type I or II and their families.
The purpose of this study is to examine risk factors for relapse of bipolar disorder during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The main goal of this study is to find the risks that may make it more likely for a woman with bipolar disorder to experience a depressive, manic, or hypomanic episode during her pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Bipolar disorder affects 2.4 million adults in the USA between the ages of 18-65 and has considerable economic impact on our society. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of open-label memantine in the acute management of adults with bipolar I disorder hospitalized for mania.
This study will evaluate pregnant women who have bipolar disorder to gain a better understanding of risk factors for bipolar disorder relapse during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
To describe the broad spectrum of Bipolar Disorder patients admitted to out-patient and in-patient psychiatric departments in Norway. Include all admitted Bipolar patients both with and without co-morbid disorders.
Fourteen subjects with bipolar disorder and 14 matching healthy controls, aged 6-13, will receive a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on a 3 Tesla scanner. They will also have a clinical interview, including the KSADS-PL. All subjects must be right-handed.
Recently, McLean hospital conducted a 4 month taurine study which showed a reduction in mania ratings. As a follow-up to the preliminary taurine study, and complementary to the currently ongoing double-blind, placebo-controlled trial for taurine in adults with bipolar disorder, this study will target adolescent bipolar subjects (type I) with symptoms of mania or mixed mania. To our knowledge, this would be the first study to evaluate the effects of the novel compound taurine in...
This study aims to gather additional information to support the theory that bipolar disorder is due to cellular (mitochondrial) dysfunction. To test this theory adults with bipolar disorder who are not currently symptomatic will receive a one-time brain scan (magnetic resonance spectroscopy [MRS] scan) with light stimulation. To test whether any MRS findings are specific to bipolar disorder, healthy controls and adults with schizophrenia will also be included in this study.
The purpose of this research study is to analyze the effectiveness and tolerability of a new medication, aripiprazole (Abilify), in individuals age 50 years and older who have bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness).
