Police samples for suspected DUI samples that have been sent for alcohol analysis or drug analysis only will be screened for drugs and alcohol respectively.
The study evaluates whether the introduction of e-alcohol therapy (alcohol therapy delivered via video conference) can break with some of the barriers related to alcohol treatment and thereby appeal to people with a problematic alcohol use (Alcohol Use Disorder Test score ≥ 8). The study aims to evaluate the effect of e-alcohol therapy on initiation, treatment compliance and alcohol intake as compared to treatment as usual .
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of caffeine on the self-administration of alcohol. The study will also examine the combined effects of alcohol and caffeine on behavioral performance, participant ratings of behavioral performance, and self-reported subjective effects.
The objective of this project was to test whether screening and brief intervention for unhealthy alcohol use leads to improved alcohol-related outcomes (such as alcohol consumption and linkage to alcohol assistance) and is cost-effective.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as perillyl alcohol, work in different ways to stop the growth of abnormal cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. It is not yet known which dose of topical perillyl alcohol is more effective in stopping the development of cancer in sun damaged skin. PURPOSE: This randomized phase II trial is studying high-dose topical perillyl alcohol to see how well it works compared with low-dose topical perillyl alco...
Unhealthy alcohol drinking is negatively influencing health of people and costing a large number of annual finance via "secondhand" effects. Additionally, unhealthy alcohol use covers a spectrum that is associated with varying degrees of risk to health. The investigators hypothesized that unhealthy alcohol drinking resulted in significant increase in anesthetic requirement during general anesthesia. This investigation would clarify the association between unhealthy alcohol use ...
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: Phase I trial to study the effectiveness of perillyl alcohol in treating patients with refractory cancer.
This study evaluates the effectiveness of a brief intervention for the reduction of alcohol use among risky alcohol users in primary care delivered by paramedics. Half of the participants will receive a brief intervention and half will receive written guidelines on safe alcohol use.
This study is designed to test LabPatch-alcohol, a wearable, non-invasive biosensor Band-Aid like patch that is designed to detect real-time changes in interstitial alcohol concentrations in human subjects. The changes in interstitial alcohol concentrations will be compared to blood alcohol concentrations to determine the patch's validity against the gold standard.
This laboratory study will employ a repeated measures experimental design to examine the effect of high (7.2% THC) and moderate (3% THC) dose of marijuana, relative to placebo, on alcohol craving and on behavioral economic measure of alcohol demand after exposure to alcohol cues, and on subsequent drinking in an alcohol choice task in which participants choose either to drink or receive monetary reinforcement for drinks not consume. The study will recruit 173 non-treatment seek...
The purpose of this study is to determine whether motivational enhancement therapy (MET) reduces alcohol use in a population of HCV-infected veterans who are currently drinking alcohol and have alcohol disorders. We hypothesize that veterans with HCV, an alcohol use disorder and continued excessive alcohol use who receive MET will have a greater reduction in the number of standard alcohol drinks per week and a greater percentage of days abstinent than veterans who receive healt...
Alcohol use among youth continues to be a major concern for this nation, with a large proportion of adolescents increasing their alcohol consumption as they transition from the 6th to the 8th grade. Although many adolescents experience alcohol-related problems, few actually seek help or treatment. This may be because traditional intervention approaches are not well suited for this age group. It is important to understand where adolescents turn to when they want to get help. ...
Aim 1: Examine effects of algorithm-guided alcohol treatment on alcohol consumption and alcohol use Disorders (AUD) symptoms. Aim 2: Examine effects of algorithm-guided alcohol treatment on retention in HIV care and HIV-related outcomes. Aim 3: Examine effects of algorithm-guided alcohol treatment on comorbid conditions
This study plans to learn more about people who are sick in the hospital with a lung infection, or respiratory failure. Respiratory failure, or severe lung failure, is a life-threatening disease. When it happens, the lungs have trouble carrying out their normal function of getting oxygen into the blood, and removing carbon dioxide from the body. Investigators are conducting this study to see what drinking too much alcohol, using tobacco products, or using drugs (both legal an...
The purpose of this study is to determine if having an alcohol use disorder affects recovery from depression, and also whether recovery from depression in patients who have alcohol use disorders is also accompanied by improvement in the alcohol use disorder.
The investigators wish to study the effects of alcohol on three forms of bariatric surgery, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). The surgery is not part of the clinical trial. If insurance does not cover the procedure, then the patient is responsible for payment of the surgical process. The investigators are doing pre and post surgery testing to provide a better understanding of the effect of bariatric surg...
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of tolcapone on decision making and alcohol intake using a laboratory bar (on-site alcohol self-administration) in alcohol drinkers.
A non invasive transdermal sensor device was developed by the Im2Np laboratory to determine the presence of vapor of alcohol in insensible perspiration. One of possible application would be a continuous and non invasive monitoring of drinking behavior. To investigate the validity of this method, it's necessary to compare Transdermal Alcohol Concentrations results obtained by this new device with Blood Alcohol Concentrations and breath Alcohol Concentrations provided by referen...
The study is a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled, 26-weeks clinical trial. The objective of the trial is to investigate the effects of the GLP-1 receptor agonist Bydureon® (exenatide) vs. placebo on alcohol intake in patients with a diagnosis of alcohol dependence.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of perillyl alcohol in treating patients with metastatic breast cancer that has not responded to previous chemotherapy.
dTMS intervention to reduce recurrent alcohol abuse among alcohol users who are abstinent for at least two weeks.
The main objective of the project is to assess whether there is an interaction between the effects of ethanol and energy drinks on driving performance. Secondary objectives include: to evaluate subjective effects (drunkenness) after administration of alcohol and energy drinks, to assess pharmacokinetics of alcohol, caffeine and taurine after alcohol and energy drinks administration and to assess if there is an increased risk of bleeding when both drinks are taken together.
The study proposes to test the efficacy of a primary care-based brief intervention with women who resumed heavy drinking during the post-partum period and who used alcohol during a previous pregnancy. The trial will also examine the effects of tobacco use, illicit drug use, depression and domestic violence on alcohol use.
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different way to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of perillyl alcohol in treating patients with metastatic prostate cancer that has not responded to hormone therapy with androgens.
This study will evaluate the behavioral effects of alcohol during placebo and n-acetylcysteine maintenance using sophisticated human laboratory methods.
