Effect of Number of Meals on Metabolism After Weight Loss Surgery

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of meal size and texture on the levels of incretin hormone, GLP-1, after Gastric Bypass Surgery (GBP). Patterns of food intake change after bariatric surgery and patients often eat multiple small low-calorie meals, a pattern that may affect blood glucose as well as incretin levels. Whether the release of GLP-1 after an oral challenge or a single liquid meal has any physiological relevance in 'real life' setting of multiple sm...

Effect of Food Form on Satiety and Gastric Emptying

Our objective is to determine whether food form (liquid vs. solid) alters gastric emptying, satiety, and food intake, when all macronutrients and fiber are controlled. The study population will include 10 healthy women, who have a normal body mass index. We have chosen to evaluate only women because this is a small pilot study and one of our endpoints is gastric emptying. Gastric emptying is known to differ between men and women. Gastric emptying will be evaluated using the ...

Studies of the Early Meal Phase in Healthy Individuals - Nutrient Absorption and Gastrointestinal Hormone Secretion

To investigate gastrointestinal hormone secretions and nutrient absorption during the early meal phase we will recruit 12 healthy young men. They will be equipped with peripheral intravenous catheters for frequent blood sampling. Participants will be screened and acclimatised to the study situation on visit 1. On visit 2 and 3 participants will in random order ingest an oral glucose solution or a standardised liquid mixed meal over 2-3 min.

Energy Expenditure and Substrate Oxidation in a Whole Room Calorimeter

The investigators aim to establish a protocol for metabolic rate measurements obtained using continuous monitoring of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production in a whole room calorimeter setting.

Assessing the Effects of a Buckwheat Beverage on Postprandial Glucose Metabolism on Healthy and T2D Individuals

Buckwheat is a unique crop because is naturally rich in compounds that have shown beneficial effects on glucose metabolism. A constant high glucose level in blood after meal consumption is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular complications and death. In order to prevent Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2D) and/or its complications it is important to have a strict control of the blood glucose levels after a meal. There are known therapies for the control of the high glucose ...

Microstructural Analysis of Ingestive Behavior After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass - Pilot

The ability to assess ingestion in fine detail over the time course of a liquid meal allows for comparison of early and late meal features of drinking and may help dissociate manipulations (surgical, neural, pharmacological, etc.) that affect orosensory properties from those that are modulating postoral processes in the control of intake. The aim of the study is to asses microstructural changes in liquid meal intake over 1-year in severely obese patients after Roux-en-Y gastri...

Microvascular Insulin Resistance and Mixed Meal Challenge

Insulin resistance (or pre-diabetes) is diagnosed using the oral glucose tolerance test. However, high blood glucose levels during this test may adversely impact on microvascular function. Investigators will determine whether a liquid mixed meal challenge (from carbohydrate, protein and fat) is a more appropriate test for assessing microvascular-derived insulin resistance.

Delinieation of GIP's Effects During a Meal in Humans Using GIP Receptor Antagoniasation (GA-4)

Delinieation of GIP's effects during a meal in humans using GIP receptor antagonisation.

A Comparitive Bioavailability Study of Metformin Hydrochloride Liquid 500mg/ 5 mL Under Fasting Conditions and After Low and High Fat Meal

To assess the food effect on pharmacokinetic profile of metformin liquid 100 mg/mL of Ranbaxy Laboratories in healthy, adult, human subjecis following a dose administration of 10 mL (1000 mg) under fasting conditions, after a Iow fat meal and after a high fat meal

A Study to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of PPB-R-203-Based Meal Versus TK9-Based Meal in 20 Patients With Diabetes

To evaluate the efficacy of PPB-R-203-Based Meal and TK9-Based Meal on blood glucose control in 20 patients with diabetes for 2 days.

Spices, Inflammation and Vascular Response in Humans

The objectives of this study are: 1. To characterize the time course of herbs/spice action on endothelial function as measured by FMD over 24 h using a challenge meal paradigm. 2. To assess effects of herbs/spices on metabolic indices (ie., glucose, insulin), and inflammatory markers such as cytokines (ie., IL-6, TNF-alpha) and vascular adhesion molecules (ICAM and VCAM).

Liquid Meal Replacements in Conjunction With Lifestyle Intervention in Overweight Adolescents

In this 3-month pilot study, we will introduce to 40 adolescents "at risk for overweight" (i.e., a BMI/age >85th percentile) a structured meal plan consisting of meal replacements, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and dairy products. We will encourage and invite at least one parent to the scheduled visits, however, no subject will be eliminated because of lack of parental involvement. In this study, we will conduct behavior modification group sessions using lesson...

Starches Digestion After Obesity Surgery.

Despite an impressive capacity to induce diabetes remissions, the gastric bypass surgery has been associated with the onset of hyperglycemic peaks, which are very intensive and transient, in formally non diabetic patients. The aim of this study is to study the digestion of starch as compared to that of glucose (same glucose load) before and after gastric bypass surgery in obese patients. Volunteers will be recruited among the candidates to a gastric bypass, and will be studied...

Metabolic and Functional Impact of Various Breakfast Models

In the present study the investigators compared the hormonal and metabolic effects of three meal loads very popular among Italian eating habits, both in the resting- and exercising state. Given the lack of time is considered a common barrier to exercise adherence, we wanted to identify a low dose of exercise capable to produce health benefits in the post-absorptive status elicited by three commonly consumed meal-models in Mediterranean countries. To this end, healthy young volu...

Influence of Meal Skipping on Macronutrient Oxidation and Glucose Metabolism Under Isocaloric Conditions

Aim of the study is to investigate the impact of meal skipping (breakfast or dinner skipping) on the regulation of glucose metabolism and macronutrient balance (protein/fat/carbohydrate intake vs. -oxidation). An isoenergetic diet with 3 conventional meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) serves as a control.

Glucose Metabolism in the Immediate and Short Term Follow up After Bariatric Surgery

MIDAS involves an assessment of glucose levels obtained before and after bariatric surgery. There are two different procedural tests involved; an oral glucose tolerance test (mixed meal) and a hyperglycemic clamp test. Two tests are performed preoperatively and five more are performed postoperatively for a one year period. The associated labwork drawn with the mixed meal and clamp tests are demonstrating changes in glucose, insulin and gut hormone levels.

Exercise-meal Timing and Postprandial Glucose Control

Physical activity helps maintain optimal postprandial blood glucose control. However, there is a lack of clear information regarding the optimal meal-activity timing required to maximize blood glucose control. By using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), this randomized controlled trial will determine whether implementing a bout of physical activity immediately before, or immediately after, or shortly after a meal is most optimal. This study will also independently examine the...

Effects of a Liquid Meal and Gut Hormones (GIP and GLP-2) on Bone Remodeling in Participants With Hypoparathyroidism.

Hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) is characterized by low levels of PTH. In this study we will test the effects of a liquid meal on the bone remodeling in participants with hypoparathyroidism. Furthermore, we will test the effects of the gut hormones GIP and GLP-2.
