This study will determine the level of association between the quantitative estimates of brain uptake of [18F]flutemetamol and the quantitative immunohistochemical estimates of amyloid levels in biopsy samples previously obtained during shunt placement in patients who have normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
Endometrial thickness has been used as an indicator of risk for endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma in asymptomatic perimenopausal women. However, there is no cutoff value in perimenopausal women and the same thickness does not express the same endometrial volume in different endometrium because uterine lengths may be different and endometrial irregularities may exist. Many studies assessed endometrial volume measured by three-dimensional (3D) TVS as a predictor of malignancy...
The study hypothesis is that an ultrasonic flow sensor can accurately measure flow in hydrocephalic shunts. The ultrasonic sensor will measure cerebrospinal fluid drainage in hydrocephalus patients with external ventriculostomies and extra-ventricular drainage systems. The sensor measurements will be compared with the volume of fluid collected by the drainage bag. After a 24-hour measurement period, the doctor will change the drainage bag position to simulate the patien...
Hydrocephalus (secondary or idiopathic) is a condition characterized by dilatation of the lateral and third ventricles, and often associated with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). We hypothesize that either the ventricle dilatation or the increased ICP may cause disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, resulting in different degrees of hypopituitarism. The goal of this study is to determine the prevalence of hypopituitarism in adult patients with hydrocephalus.
To determine the level of association between the quantitative estimates of brain uptake of [18F]flutemetamol and the quantitative immunohistochemical and histochemistry estimates of amyloid levels in frontal lobe biopsy samples obtained from subjects during shunt placement for NPH.
The overall aim of the registry is to develop a longitudinal, observational database that is focused on adult patients with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) that can be used as a source of clinical information for individual surgeons, as well as a national data repository for scientific inquiry and publications.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation is safe in adult patients with communicating hydrocephalus and risk factors for complications from the standard surgical treatment. It may also help determine whether the endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation is effective in treating your communicating hydrocephalus. We hope that this research will allow us to place fewer shunts in patients with conditions similar to yours, avoiding complica...
This study aims to provide class 1 evidence supporting or refuting the existence of normal pressure hydrocephalus.
With the advent of the aging society, dementia becomes the focus of common people. As for the neurodegeneration dementia, no disease modifying treatments have been discovered. Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is considered as one of reversible dementia, which can be hint by the surgery. In addition, dementia of iNPH is the typical subcortical dementia. Therefore exploring the pathogenic mechanism is conducive to the early diagnosis and treatment. This research is...
The purpose of this study is to test and compare the efficacy of Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy with shunting of Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)for treatment for patients of Normal pressure Hydrocephalus.
Neonatal postinfectious hydrocephalus (PIH) is a major public health problem in East Africa. The standard treatment has long been placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) but these devices require life-long maintenance and nearly all fail multiple times. Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) with Choroid Plexus Cauterization (ETV/CPC) is an alternate treatment to give patients a shunt-free life. In this study, the investigators aim to optimize the metrics of evaluation a...
The purpose of this study is to investigate if a systematic intervention with early identifying of patients with posttraumatic amnesia using a reality orientation therapy can reduce the period with posttraumatic amnesia in order to get a better outcome for patients with traumatic brain injury
The Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN) has been established by philanthropic funding to conduct multi-institutional research (clinical trials and observational studies) on pediatric hydrocephalus. The HCRN consists of five Clinical Centers and the Data Coordinating Center (DCC). The HCRN Core Data Project will obtain data about all neurosurgical hydrocephalus events from the network Clinical Centers, and create a database to be used by HCRN investigators. The ongoin...
This is a pilot study examining the feasibility and efficacy of using Apple iPad applications ("apps") during therapy interventions that target visual motor, visual attention, and visual-spatial reasoning skills in school age children who were previously treated surgically for hydrocephalus. Each subject will participate in an initial assessment and baseline MRI, followed by 6-weeks of iPad app-based interventions, and finally a follow-up assessment and a follow-up MRI.
The purpose of the study is to estimate the incidence of posttraumatic hypopituitarism, and to identify predisposing factors in order to establish a rational responsible socioeconomic screening program.
The purpose of this study is to examine the role of ShuntCheck and MR Imaging in evaluating the presence or absence of Shunt Obstruction in the patients of Hydrocephalus or Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) undergoing radionuclide test for suspected shunt obstruction. This is an exploratory study to determine how a non-invasive device can assist in detection of presence of flow in these patients.
The study will collect prospective cohort data of individuals that are undergoing routine clinical care for suspected idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). The administration of the Conner's Continual Performance Test - version 3 (CPT-3), an automated 14-minute computerized measure of reaction-time and sustained attention, will be added to the current neurocognitive screen being used (i.e., the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA) along with gait assessment. Patients ...
The aim of the study is to determine the effects of clinical Pilates Exercises on the level of pain, functional status, flexibility, static and dynamic endurance of the truncus muscles and quality of life in patients with lumbar disc herniation.
The purpose of this Registry is to compare shunt/catheter-related infection rates among various shunt systems when used according to hospital standard of care to treat hydrocephalus.
This study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a single-dose intervertebral disc injection of SI-6603 in subjects with lumbar disc herniation (LDH)
The investigators will quantify inflammatory biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of children with hydrocephalus who are undergoing ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement under isoflurane anesthesia.
Intracerebral hemorrhage is bleeding into the brain and is a major cause of stroke and other complications. Brain injury from intracerebral hemorrhage occurs in two phases. The early phase involves the mechanical compression of brain tissue by the expanding hematoma. In a later phase, brain swelling develops causing further compression that may lead to brain herniation and death. This study investigates the neuroprotective role of haptoglobin, in minimizing the development of ...
This study was conducted with the aim of determining whether or not Non surgical spinal decompression therapy was effective in remission of herniation, decreasing pain and improving functional status.
External Ventricular Deviation (EDV) is a medical device that provides transient and controlled external drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This device can also monitor intracranial pressure (ICP). SEV is an emergency measure indicated for acute hydrocephalus and / or intracranial hypertension (HTIC). Weaning from a DVE should be considered as soon as possible from the moment the patient's clinical condition allows it. There is no consensus on how to wean SEVs. The m...
Patients with lumbar disc herniation suffer from pain and morbidity. Surgical intervetion can be a quick and effective relief, however some individuals experience less favorable outcome. This study tries to investigate and test the differences in pain perception and pain modulation between individuals. Using PET/CT scans the investigators try to visualize pain perception and -modulation in the CNS. This is subsequently correlated with a battery of pain tests and the surgical o...
