Sweden - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel

03:22 EDT 25th May 2013 | BioPortfolio

The Scandinavian country of Sweden is home to a thriving biotechnology industry, one of the top 5 in Europe. Europe has become a global center for the industry, helped by €2 billion worth of funds from the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations and the European Commission. Sweden is still standing out, thanks to excellent academic institutions such as the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University, and many high-quality global companies.

In addition to the big MNC, the south of the country hosts many start-up companies in this field. Further good news for new companies is the BIO-X program, which provides funding, project management, IT support and expert advice in this area for new start-ups.

Uppsala is surrounding by excellent biotech companies. Abbot, Activis, Novo Nordisk, Siemens HealthCare, Semcon Medical Life Science and Biogen Idec are just a handful of the global reaching companies which operate in Sweden.
