California - Biotech, Pharma and Life Science Channel
In addition to the Silicon Valley, California on the west coast of the USA is home to a biotechnology hub. 26% of all American biotechnology firms are located in this state, but they count for over half of the biotechnology revenues nationally, indicating this is a real hospot for quality biotechnology.
Part of this is due to a political campaign on behalf of the state to attract more than the Silicon Valley companies. Proposition 71 has also had significant impact, attracting companies under a legislative "Stem Cell Initiative", which provides $3bn of funding from 2006 to 2016 for stem cell research in this state.
Currently over 220 biotech companies, organizations and academic institutions are based in California. Some of these include the top pharmaceutical companies in the world (based on annual sales income) such as Bayer, InVivo Technologies, Gilead Sciences, Amgen, Pfizer, Merck & Co., Johnson & Johnson and Roche.
