The mission of Omeris is to accelerate bioscience discovery, innovation, and commercialization of global value, driving economic growth and improved quality of life in Ohio.Omeris, founded in 1987 as Edison BioTechnology Center, is a non-profit organization designed to build and accelerate bioscience industry, research, and education in Ohio. As Ohio's bioscience membership and development organization, we are focused on networking the distributed and outstanding bioscience assets of Ohio to promote regional, national, and global best of class competitiveness and growth. These assets include: 2 of the nation’s top 10 pediatric hospitals, 3 of the top 20 heart and heart surgery centers, and 4 of the top 20 nationally ranked teaching hospitals; The Cleveland Clinic, the top cardiology hospital in the U.S. and fourth ranked hospital overall; Columbus-headquartered Battelle Memorial Institute, the largest global contract research organization; more than 10% of Fortune 35 companies—including Cardinal Health and Procter & Gamble, both leaders in biosciences; academic institutions that rank among the top nationally in technology conversion and commercialization; and government and public sector support of the biosciences, such as Ohio's $1.6 billion Third Frontier Project. (click here for more Bio in Ohio stats & facts) Innovative Ohio bioscience companies—many of them members of Omeris—revitalize our state’s economy while developing critical tools, treatments, and technologies that benefit the world. Omeris is a focal point for the bioscience and biotechnology community, providing networking and educational events, continually developing web-based resources, addressing public policy, and analyzing resource and funding issues.Currently, Omeris efforts focus on four major objectives:business assistance support to regional incubators, to both raise money and accelerate the growth of emerging bioscience companies marketing and raising the visibility of Ohio’s Bioscience assets through regional, national, and international channels targeted asset-based attraction strategy
special projects that strengthen Ohio’s bioscience asset base, like the Ohio BioRepository Headquartered in Columbus, Omeris is supported by the Thomas Edison Program of the Ohio Department of Development and member contributions. Omeris regional business development affiliates are located in Athens (Edison Biotechnology Institute), Cincinnati (BIO/START), Cleveland (BioEnterprise), and Columbus (Business Technology Center).Omeris also is affiliated with BIO, the national organization that represents biotechnology companies in the United States and in 33 other nations.
